I have what I believe to be Virtumonde. I've been chipping away at this for about a week, so if I leave something out, please forgive me. I ran PC Tools Spyware Doctor, which was bundled with some Google stuff. It cleaned some stuff; I then ran HJT and killed all the gibberish files I saw (abcdmouse.dll, etc). OK, probably/possibly BAD. Not only did the pop-ups not go away, I get this *continual* message:Using Firefox as an example-- Header reads: firefox.exe - Bad Image Text within: The application or DLL globalroot\systemroot\system32\UACnldgidap.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

Firefox (or whatever) will not start until I check OK. I had to hit that button over a hundred times or so when I ran DDS.

Meanwhile, applications now take a lo-oo-ong time to start. (I was terrified at first because it seemed nothing at all responded: :thumbup2: oh no, my computer is DEAD) When I first got this, my performance re Task Manager was topped out at 100%; now it's normal (something I did?) but things are still slow.

Here is my DDS log as instructed. I will be very grateful for any help you have. REALLY grateful.

Howdy, my name is Hoov, and I will be helping you with your dilemma. Appologies for taking so long in getting to you and your problem.

Please make sure you watch this thread for responses. If you click the options tab at the top of your first post, you can select to track this thread.

Here is what I am asking you to do during the repair of your computer

*Tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

*Please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

*Follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go. Don't install anything, even other programs that have nothing to do with security or malware, it could cause things to change, and I would never know it.

*Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

*Stick with me to the end. My aim is to fix your problems, and give you the tools and knowledge to keep this from happening again.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

If I am helping you and you don't hear from me for 24Hrs, send me a PM Please!

I hope you have not done the reformat.

Run comboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Also make sure you close all your browsers just before the instructions tell you to start the scanner.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

:thumbup2: ComboFix just won't run. I thought maybe it was the safe mode. So I tried to get lucky with "restore to last good config." (I say "get lucky" bc the last time I tried this it went back to totally frozen mode.)

Anyway, here I am at least for now. But ComboFix still just sits there. I downloaded it, closed everything, disabled spyware doctor, I double click, and the pointer does the working thing, and then it stops, and it's not running in the background according to task manager. It just won't run. So I figured to a)write you and b)meanwhile start burning backup files while it feels like letting me access the dvd burner. (That drive is disabled in safe mode . . .)

Any ideas? Other utilities?

Anyway: Things I have done--

Ran Spyware Doctor, which told me I had the Virtumonde but couldn't remove it

Googled and learned a little about virtumonde and its gibberish files

Ran HJT (before going to the forum) and got rid of all the lines I saw which were for gibberish.whatever (I realize that this probably only confused virtumonde, because then things got worse.)

This was when I started getting the error window for every single command as noted in my first post. It seems to be harmless if annoying.

Came here and ran the DDS app and posted its log as directed

That was about when the damn thing pretty much just stopped working.

If this piece of "last good configuration" is like the last, sooner or later it will freeze up and require a reboot. (Once it had to go all the way to a cold reboot; i.e. unplugging.) I think the popups may overload things maybe.

The adware (random sales, porn) and the fake spyware alerts (for spyware protect 2009 and registry defender, and I think something else with the fake windows firewall box re "spyware.Ispyware"------all still here.

I'll check back early and often to see what's next. Thank you so much for trying to help me.

I am sorry to have left you hanging this weekend. I am having a cat5e cable problem. I have a real ugly fix right now so I can do some catch up and let people know I didn't abandon them intentionally. I won't be able to post again until March 17 at about 5PM East Coast USA time (UCT -4).

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Try renaming combofix to multifix.exe and then run it in safe mode.

No problem re the wait--you're volunteering, after all!!! I hope the cable thing clears up for you.

:thumbup2: Multifix.exe did the trick!!

Here's the log; by the way, as soon as it finished, VirusScan reported that it had detected something called RemAdm-ProcLaunch and deleted it. I have no idea if this is related.

(I hope you meant to post it and not to attach it . . )

Cool. Now update virus scan and do a complete scan of your system.

Also, Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

You are right now one of my very favorite human beings on earth. Really.

OK--my Virus Scan was downloaded from school; I graduated; good for me, bad for app updates. I ran the Malwarebytes--I installed it normally, then ran it in safe mode (I hope that doesn't matter; I rebooted in normal mode as directed.) It found some more stuff, including some really familiar looking old pals but with a dll.vir ending. (Are they kidding? Do they really name them .vir??????)

:thumbup2: Nope they are not that stupid, although that would be a good thing.

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\svcho.exe.vir (Trojan.Fakealert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{106CF321-99A3-4E3A-9103-1BD027606A99}\RP805\A0122930.dll (Trojan.Vundo) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

The first one is a quarantine file from Combofix. All of them in C:\Qoobox\Quarantine have already been removed. They were just in a holding cell awaiting final deletion. The second type C:\System Volume Information\_restore are in the system restore files, and will be deleted when we are done, just in case we need to do a system restore.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rn.tmp (Trojan.Downloader) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACowqiesmp.dll (Trojan.TDSS) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

These two are what we were after. How is your computer running? Are there any problems left?

It *seems* to be--but then again, it seemed to be fine after ComboFix. Which makes me nervous; I'm seeing an analogy here re stopping antibiotics when you feel better. (Would running the pair of these on my nowhere-near-as-sick (at least not obviously) laptop work? Or should I go back in queue--I feel like I should end with "and wait for a grownup.")

I am terrified that this will happen again. (Well, less terrified after discovering that heroes like you can fix it, but that's being a pig of your time, when I wish I had the know-how to give some back.) Suggestions? Recommendations?

(thankyouthankyouthankyou)

what I would like you to do is to run your computer for a day or two, and if there are no problems when you come back, we can do some cleanup, I will give you some info for the future, and then we can call this one done.

Now there are something's you need to do to fully clean your system and keep it secure.

[*]Please download OTCleanIt from one of the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:[*]Double click the Posted Image icon.
[*] Click the large "Cleanup" button.
[*] A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
[*] Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
[*] You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
[*] Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
[*] If you have a firewall that throws out a message that OTMI3 is attempting to contact the Internet that it should be allowed.
[*]You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
[/list]
Cleaning out Temporary Files etc. There are several different products that you can use for this. You can go thru the Internet Options in the windows Control Panel. There are several programs that also do the job better than windows does it, in my opinion. There is System Security Suite, EasyCleaner, Ccleaner. Also sometimes other program sometimes do it as well as what you originally got it for like ZoneAlarm Security Suite. Just make sure to keep them updated and use them regularly.

Disable and Enable System Restore.
If you are using Windows Vista or XP, then I recommend you turn off System restore, and then turn it back on so that you will not be able to restore your problems to a clean computer.

Here are some good tutorials for that.
Windows Vista Restore Guide
or
Windows XP System Restore Guide
Reboot
Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Create a System Restore Point
Go to all programs, then to accessories, then to system tools, then to system restore. Check the box for create restore point (not select a restore point), then click next and follow the instructions.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions: (unless you are using ZoneAlarm Security Suite or something similar, then you would secure the browser thru the firewall).

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Also see the following: Securing Your Web Browser
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security

Use a different browser other than IE (most exploits are pointed towards IE). One of them is
Firefox.
It is also worth trying Thunderbird for controlling spam in your e-mail.

Always use an UPDATED anti-virus program Make sure you update this at least weekly, if not more often. This is one thing that may Ave you more than anything else.

Run malware scanners. Three free ones are Spybot Search and Destroy, and AdAware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Always use a firewall.
Any firewall is better than none, and you should pick a firewall that you will use, as even the best firewall is worthless if you turn it off.

Learn how to use your firewall Only programs that need it should have access to the net. But these are specific to the firewall you use, so you will need to learn how. Several firewalls have support forums here. My page will help you with ZoneAlarm if that is what you choose.

Never run two Antivirus programs or two Firewalls at the same time. They can interfere with each other and cause problems. Some people swear that more protection is provided, but the reverse is true. They tend to argue amongst themselves and end up leaving holes. Now I have more than 1 AV installed on my computer, and I keep them up to date. I only run one at a time, but each program has weakness's, so I keep a backup in case my computer starts acting up.

MOST IMPORTANT : Windows and IE, and whatever other software that you have that connects to the net, needs to be kept updated. The reason is, these programs connect to the net, and if there is an internal security problem, you have already told your firewall to allow the communication, and thus you will have allowed a hole. UPDATES are important. I suggest that you make sure that Windows Updates and the updates for your antivirus and antimalware programs are set for automatic updates.

Don't ever use P2P or filesharing software Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.
