Hello,

I have gotten infected with some sort of Spyware that keeps shutting my anti-virus software down. I also am not able to get rid of whatever the file is. I run Panda Anti-virus with the firewall. I've also run Anti-Bytes Malware, Spybot and Ad-Aware. Nothing seems to pick this problem up. I have placed passwords in Panda to hopefully help but I see I keep getting infected with spyware constantly. In the Panda log, I believe it shows the files in the Qoobox folder (which show in the Documents and Settings Folder).

I have run ComboFix and Hijackthis on my system in the past with help. I'd really appreciate some help to fix this problem and let me know if I need to run these programs.

Thank you for your help.

Here is my Panda log for the last few days:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.34) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with disinfection. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes. Click this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.

Yes, there are signs of it. When I started my computer this morning my anti-virus software was again turned off. When I turned it back on, the firewall shows as red instead of green even though everything else turned green again. I hate this stuff!

Any other recommendations? I really appreciate your help!

Please download Sysclean Package and the latest Virus Pattern Files - (Pattern files are usually named lptxxx.zip, where xxx is the pattern file number) and save them to your desktop.
  • Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided in the How to Use System Cleaner for performing a scan.
  • If you get a message that "required files are missing", click Ok and wait for sysclean.com to unpack them.
  • This tool generates a log file (sysclean.log) in the same folder where you ran it - C:\Sysclean.
-- When using Sysclean its best to use the Administrator's account or an account with Administrative rights otherwise you will not have access rights to scan some locations. You can also Use the "Run As" Command to Start a Program as an Administrator. Even when doing that, the scanning process may result in "Access Denied" messages for some files. This is normal because these files are protected by the system.

-- Some anti-virus programs will alert you of a virus attack when running sysclean so it's best to disable them before using this tool.

Were you using a customs HOSTS file?

If so, the scan appears to have falsely detected parts of the HOSTS file as threats.

I'm not sure what a custom HOSTS file is. Since I scanned the computer, I have gotten several connection attempts that my firewall has blocked for many different IP addresses.

Some security programs like Spybot S&D will add a customs Hosts file to your existing one and you may not be aware of it.

The HOSTS file is a text file that has no extension and can be viewed using notepad. At the top is an explanation of the simple syntax. Each line is an IP address, a domain name, and an optional comment placed after a # sign. A HOSTS file maps an IP address to a name. 127.0.0.1 localhost is the universal IP address of all local computers and is the standard hostname given to the address of the loopback network interface which refers to the local computer only.

The original purpose of hosts files was to map the proper address to a site's name but now its also used for blocking purposes. The loopback address is used to stop web ads from displaying because 127.0.0.1 indicates home (the location of your computer) and whatever is redirected home will not leave the system. To learn more about this, you can read Hosts File FAQS and LMHosts and Hosts files.

An example HOSTS file is shown here. An example of a customized HOSTS file is shown here. If you're using, Spybot S&D, its custom HOSTS file will include the line "# Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy" at the top.

To view the folder containing your Hosts file, go to Start > Run and type: %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\

The Hosts file has as no extension. The easiest way to access and view the contents is by using notepad.
  • Double-click on the HOSTS file.
  • A message will appear saying Windows can't open the file or Choose the program you want to open this file.
  • Scroll down the list of programs until you see Notepad.
  • Select it and click OK.

I have gotten several connection attempts that my firewall has blocked for many different IP addresses.

A firewall serves two basics purposes: Prevent incoming communications that you did not request from entering your computer and to monitor what programs on your computer are allowed to communicate out. It does this by enforcing an access control policy to permit or block (allow or deny) inbound and outbound traffice. Thus, the firewall acts as a central gateway for such traffic by denying illegitimate transfers and facilitatint access which is deemed legitimate. The goal of the firewall is to prevent remote computers from accessing yours and provide an alert of any unrequested traffic that was blocked along with the IP address.

If your firewall provides an alert that indicates it has blocked access to a port that does not necessarily mean your system has been compromised. Firewall alert messages are a response to unrequested traffic from remote computers. The alert means that your firewall has blocked an attempt from an external host to access a port on your computer that is commonly used by a trojan. Even if the port is open, the alert message indicates that your firewall has blocked the attempt to access it. These alerts are often classified by the network port they arrive on and allow you to see the activity of what is happening on your firewall. The alerts allow the firewall to notify you in various ways about possible penetration and intrusion attempts on your computer.

It is not unusal for a firewall to provide numerous alerts regarding such attempted access. Botnets and Zombie computers scour the net and will randomly scan a block of IP addresses. These infected computers are searching for "vulnerable ports" and make repeated attempts to access them. Your firewall is doing its job by blocking this kind of traffic and alerting you about these intrusion attempts. However, not all unrequested traffic is malevolent. Even your ISP will send out regular checks to see if your computer is still there.

If the alerts become too annoying, you should be able to go into your firewall settings and turn them off (Hide notification messages).
