Hi, and thanks in advance for any time you devote to this.

For several weeks I have been getting a Windows error message. A variation of it pops up whenever a program starts up:

"[****.exe]
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\jimekaju.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette".

Where [****.exe] shows on the border of the message box and **** refers to whatever program I have just started up (as well as some that fire up automatically while my computer is running, like Google desktop, Symantec Endpoint, etc).

Scans with Symantec Endpoint, Malaware Bytes, AdAware and SpyBot S&D have not helped to this point.

While I can click "OK" through these error messages and my PC seems to otherwise operate normally (selected program still works, no detectable slowdown or anything), this can get pretty annoying. I have to click "OK" about 40 times when I boot my machine and I would say that's probably an accurate count of how many processes have to start up because this message ALWAYS shows up when starting ANY program.

Please help!

Thanks,

Chris

OK folks, I think I may have solved this one myself. Time will tell (read to the end if you wish, there are still a couple instances of jimekaju.dll in my new DDS log).

I noticed from the DDS log in my post above, under the Pseudo HJT Report, that the "AppInit_DLLs:" line contained my error term (jimekaju.dll). I Googled how to edit the AppInit_DLLs line and decided to take my chances, seeing as this file has given me nothing but grief and probably shouldn't be there, writing down what I had done in case I had to reverse it later on.

From the webpage:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Clipboard_not_working

I got these instructions:

Removing AppInit_DLLS

Caution: While these steps should be safe to perform if followed correctly, you should never edit the registry if you don't feel confident or are unsure of what you are doing.

1. Important! Close all Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer windows.
2. Click Start > Run…
3. Type “regedit.exe” and press OK.
4. Get to the following location in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
5. In the pane on the right-hand side of regedit you should see a String called “AppInit_DLLs”
6. Take note of any value listed to the right of “AppInit_DLLs” as it may indicate you have malware installed.
7. Right click on “AppInit_DLLs” and choose Delete.

For the last step, instead of deleting the whole thing, I decided to edit the line and removed the following part:
,c:\windows\system32\jimekaju.dll

I figured the Google part was there because I use Google Desktop.

Restarted the computer and haven't received an error message yet. I'll include a new DDS log below, in case anyone is interested. And, of course I'll be back if it decides to come back...

NOTE: The following shows up in the new DDS log, so I'm not 100% confident I am free of this thing. If there is anything additional I need to do, please let me know.

c:\windows\system32\jimekaju.dll

Thanks!

If your are fixed, please tell us?

otherwise,

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
