I can install some programs, but not others. To be fair, I don't know exactly when the installation problem began, but it came after resolving a problem by removing Roxio and Sonic Ceneplayer (I think) from my computer and registry. I also apparently had a wayward MS automatic update force a System Restore. I didn't install anything for some time, then had a problem installing a freeware program a couple of weeks ago. About that time I found I couldn't open Outlook, which I uninstalled to reinstall a fresh version, but no go. Some exe's work, though.

My computer is a Sony Vaio laptop with XP Home, SP2. It's got a 1.6 CPU and 2GB memory. It scanned clean with NOD32 and online scanners after the Roxio ordeal. I don't remember Google prompted me I do to successfully get rid of Roxio and stop Windows Installer from repeatedly starting up each time a video thumbnail showed in Windows Explorer.

I'm pretty sure Installer still is the problem, but I don't get an error message when a double-clicked exe fails. InstallShield just does away and nothing more happens. I've looked in the Event Viewer's Application Log and found such suspicious clues as "handwritingfiles" and "solefeature," but Google didn't turn up much, so I hoping someone will help. The log said "Detection of product '{90170409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}', feature 'HandWritingFiles' failed during request for component '{E6BFD503-3A35-4B78-BAB5-9570EDDEF81C}'" so I searched that number in RegEdit and found it under DefaultIcon in FFAFile, FFLFile, FFTFile, FFXFile, fphtmlfile, fpxmlfile, htxfile as well as fpicon.exe,1 and fpicon.exe,14 and misc.exe,6 -- all of which means Greek (or rather geek) to me.

I've downloaded and installed the latest Windows Installer and upgraded InstallShield as well as Java among other things. But I wasn't able to install MS updates (which I'd gone from automatic to manual after the previous problem).

Please point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

You can try this free utility to re-register the Windows Installer also: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Standard_version
