This has been driving me crazy for days...how can I avoid doing work when this is happening!!!

Last week my work computer contracted some sort of virus which slows everything down immensely, especially browsers (IE 7 works sort-of okay but Firefox is useless--I can check GMail but when GChat tries to load, I get a "problem" #104) and, of course, is re-directing all my web searches to random shopping sites.

I have scanned the computer numerous times with AVG but nothing is found. I have uninstalled and re-installed Firefox. I suspected the 7.7.7.0 virus but the 7770 Finder returns nothing. I have downloaded SDFix but it won't run at all. I also have a log file from HiJackThis but I don't know how to read it.

One of my co-workers is experiencing the same problem; the IT guy said he fixed it (not sure what he did to her computer) but her problem remains.

I am using WindowsXP Professional version 5.1.

Please, someone, help me! I will bake you delicious cookies. Thank you so, so much!

Here is my DDS log file:

Hi asavas,

Welcome back to the BleepingComputer forums.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for assistance. Every one of our team members is a volunteer and unfortunately, there are often just not enough to keep up with demand. Thank you so much for your patience.

If your issue has been resolved or you have received help elsewhere, please post a reply here and let us know so that we can close this thread.

If you still need assistance, my name is SpotCheckBilly (SCB for short) and I will be happy to help you.

===Very Important===

The instructions in this thread have been specifically designed for THIS USER'S MACHINE ONLY . You should not use these instructions to clean your machine. Doing so could cause irreparable damage to your machine. If you need assistance, please start your own thread.

=================

A few things which will make our fix go more smoothly.
  • Please >> DO NOT<< run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to.
  • Please DO NOT install any software while we are working.
  • Please Do not skip any steps. With some infections skipping a step can be disastrous.
  • If there is something you don't understand or or are unsure of -- please stop and take a moment to ask about it.
  • If you are running P2P filesharing program(s). My recommendation is you uninstall it/them.
  • Remove any cracked/pirated software. I will immediately stop helping you if I discover any.
The most important thing to remember is to be patient. Very seldom can we remove the entire infection in one go. Many of today's infections install other infections and for the most part they do not like to go quietly. :)

Your IT guy may have placed restrictions on your machine that don't allow it to run SDFix, which is a very good thing. Tools such as SDFix are very powerful and if used incorrectly can render your machine totally inoperable. This also means that your IT guy should do the steps for the fix. As a general rule we don't like to do fixes on a company computer unless we work directly with the IT department. Please advise your IT guy that he needs to work with me to fix the problem.

Thank you. -- SCB :thumbup2:
