Hi,
I have some kind of infection on my computer. I have a windows XP home edition. and I only use firefox. i have a wireless connection and two other laptops in my computer that i constantly use (all windows XP also).
The signs that I see of it are:
1- many times when I click on links the website tries redirecting to somewhere else. firefox however stops it from doing that (i get a little toolbar on the top that says website tried to redirect, and it asks me if i want to redirect it)
2- i have a little magnifying glass that shows up in the lower right hand tool bar- date/time area. when i left click on it it and a box shows up. the title is 'search settings' and then it says 'prevent unknown programs from changing your default search settings without your knowledge' and then it has possibilites for IE and Firefox, with two options. the first option 'notify me first before allowing changes to my settings' and the second option is 'allow programs to change my settings'. the second option is the one that is checked off, and the settings cant be changed at all, i can only see it but i cant change it. sometimes one anti virus or another will be able to remove this magnifying glass (which i pretty much use as an indicator if my pc is clean or not) but the next time i restart my computer it will be back.

what have i done:
1- i used to run lavasoft adaware, symantecs and avast. they would be able to remove the 'magnifying glass', and each time by finding something different, but then it would be back. some of the files it would find with a high risk would be win32.TDSS.rtk or win32wormlovgate.. but each time it finds something different. i cant remember the other names it finds. but almost always any anti-virus i run finds a trojan horse in the win 32 folder. after a while, all those programs that i ran stopped finding ANYTHING anymore.
2- i tried other stuff, spybot, malware, etc. and they did nothing
3 last thing i tried was to remove both all the antiviruses i had (at one time i usually only have symantecs and avast) and installed the last thing kaspersky. it found some things too, but couldnt removed that cursed magnifying glass. the last thing it found was Exploit.Java.Gimsh.b.. but i still dont see anything else changing.
4- i even tried avast virus cleaner (not the anti-virus home edition one, but the worm cleaner or something) and some specific worm cleaners from kaspersky, but they did nothing.
5- i even turned off system restore, ran symantecs, it found nothing, but for some reason when i uninstalled symantecs the magnifying glass disappeared! but then even though i had turned off system restore, when i restarted the computer it was back again.

i really dont know what it is, im used to finding out the name of what infection i have, researching that specific one and removing it. but i just cant find one name for this infection. adaware used to detec win32.trojan.agent and win32.trojan.spy and win32.trojandownloader.agent all with a TAI of 10 (highest threat levell) but nothing that ive installed detects anything anymore. it seems that the pc is clean but its not.

Thanks for anyway that you can help me,

Hello. How many active antirus programs are running?
Now let's see what we can find. Please for this scan disable all AV's after download,

Next run MBAM:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.32) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from
    here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD
and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is
difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do
so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its
disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please
temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

oh, and the redirecting is getting pretty bad. sometimes when i come to log into my gmail or something else, it takes a really really long time because it keeps saying that the page is being redirected elsewhere.

Hi,sorry I was out of the country till today,if you still need assistance please run SDFix.

Please print out and follow these instructions: "How to use SDFix". <- This program is for Windows 2000/XP ONLY.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Disconnect from the Internet and temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any real time protection programs before performing a scan.
  • When done, the SDFix report log will open in notepad and automatically be saved in the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • If SDFix is unable to run after rebooting from Safe Mode, run SDFix in either Mode, and type F, then press Enter for it to finish the final stage and produce the report.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of Report.txt in your next reply.
  • Be sure to renable you anti-virus and and other security programs before connecting to the Internet.
-- If the computer has been infected with the VirusAlert! malware warning from the clock and the Start Menu icons or drives are not visible, open the SDFix folder, right-click on either the XP_VirusAlert_Repair.inf or W2K VirusAlert_Repair.inf (depending on your version of Windows) and select Install from the Context menu. Then reboot to apply the changes.

If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Now SAS:
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

That was a good find and removal. We should run part 1 of s}Siri's SmitfraudFix and see if these had relatives living here.

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

so i did smitfraud, but i didnt turn off all the antivirus scanners (i didnt know if i was supposed to). so while it was scanning, adwatch alive (which i have running) said that it blocked 'vacix.exe' a win32.trojan.spy from running. should i repeat it with all scanners/internet turned off?
here is the log:

Hi OK this looks real good now. The vacfix exe is a SmitFraudFix file. As you see when you turned the others off it 's not there. As with this
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
Your program did it's job and found an intruder.. albeit this time it was a good guy.

Let's just do one more step to be certain everything is clear.

Rerun MBAM like this.

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan.
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.
