I've been trying to disinfect this computer for a friend, and more viruses keep coming back. I've scanned with AVG 8 free (main antivirus), malwarebytes, sdfix, and superanti spyware. For a little while it wouldn't log on normally, only showing the background with no icons or system tray, but I got in safe mode and ran malwarebytes and cleaned the registry and all files with ccleaner and I can now log on again.

Currently, AVG resident shield continually pops up with infected items, on open of certain folders and files, and on startup with a bunch. Some viruses its told me it found were adware generic3.akgs, trojan downloader bho.hun (i think), and some registry infections of ms juan and new juan.

Hi,

I have bad news for you :thumbup2:

I see you're dealing with Virut on top of the other nasty malware you are dealing with. In that case, it's unfortunately a lost case - Game over situation and a format and reinstall is the fastest and especially the safest solution.

You may want to read this why:
Virut and other File infectors - Throwing in the Towel?

So, I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc.. Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...
This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.

Read here for instructions how to format and reinstall Windows: http://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/adva...all-format.html

Yeah..I kinda figured. I had to wipe a hard drive a couple weeks ago for this lady who got infected almost as bad. What way do you suggest is best for backing up data? I could get a crossover cable and copy needed files over to my secondary hard drive that I'm hardly using. Or I've been told there's a SATA-usb cable I can get (since my personal comp doesn't have SATA, and the infected one does)

Hi,

As long as you don't back up any files I mentioned in my previous post... because this one infects several legitimate files (.exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...)
So basically, there's not much left to backup unfortunately.

Yes, copying the files to a second hard drive is a solution - or via flashdrive etc...
Just make sure, before you transfer them again afterwards, that you install an Antivirus first on the reinstalled Computer and let it update and perform a full scan first with the flashdrive or external harddrive or any other media where you backed up the files inserted. So basically, let the Antivirus scan all drives. If everything is OK, then you can transfer them back.

By the way...

I had to wipe a hard drive a couple weeks ago for this lady who got infected almost as bad

Then it's because this lady likes to visit illegal sites, download cracks etc via P2P (Limewire, Bittorrent etc..). Because that's how this malware is being spread.
It may be a good idea, after you have formatted and reinstalled Windows, to set this Prevention page as her startpage. It contains lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future. :thumbup2:

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.
