I have a Toshiba laptop with a built in web cam that works when I am not on the internet. Once I get online, the camera will not work anymore and says that it is locked by another program. I thought that there might be another program running so I ran Spybot in safemode to see if anything would come up. When spybot was scanning, I could see that it was scanning through coolwww, however it did not detect it nor try to delete it. I have ran hijackthis and here is the log:

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hello.

Update Java to Version 6 Update 12
Your current version of Java is outdated. Malware creators can exploit the lesser security of older versions. Please uninstall your current version through Add/Remove Programs. Remove all instances of Java, J2SE Runtime, Java Runtime, and Java Runtime Environment. Restart your computer after uninstalling.

Please download the installer here. Choose "Windows"

Delete the installer after use.

F-Secure Online Scan
Please run F-Secure Online Scanner.
This scan is for Internet Explorer only.
  • It is suggested that you disable security programs and close any other windows during the scan. While your security is disabled, please refrain from surfing on other sites. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Go to F-Secure Online Scanner
  • Follow the instructions here for installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs, click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically. The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and copy the entire report in your next reply.
  • Be sure to re-enable any security programs.

Any symptoms of infection at the moment?

With Regards,
The Panda

it really is not acting up as bad now, but I did a scan with spyware doctor and it found the www.CoolWebSearch but did not delete it. Every time I use internet explorer (instead of firefox) at the top of the window, it says "www.coolwebsearch.com" Some of my programs open up incorrectly and sometimes they wont open up at all.

Thank you for your help

Hello.

Let's get rid of that window title.

Apply Registry Script
  • Copy the following into a notepad (Start>Run>"notepad"). Do not copy the word "code".
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
    "Window Title"=-
  • Click File, then Save As... .
  • Click Desktop on the left.
  • Under the Save as type dropdown, select All Files.
  • In the box File Name, input fix.reg
  • Hit OK.
When done properly, the icon should look like Posted Image.

Double click fix.reg and answer Yes to the prompts. You should recieve the message that the entries have been successfully merged. If not, post back with the error message.

Delete fix.reg after use.

Is it gone?

Please proceed with the F-Secure scan when ready.

With Regards,
The Panda

Ok, I did the fix.reg just as you said, and the icon shows up on my desktop like it is supposed to, but when I double click on it, nothing happens, it just opens back up and shows the contents of the notepad. And my I.E still has the title of www.coolweb.com....... sorry if I am making this hard......

OH and I did reinstall the java (i uninstalled the old one).. :thumbup2:

I have tried several times to run the F-Secure and I will not work, I can do a print screen to show you what it is doing, but I cannot get it to work, and the coolwebsearch is still at the top in the title. Thank you for your help

Hello.

AH, you file associations were damaged, so the registry script didn't work.

Download this file and place it on your desktop.
  • Extract the contents to your desktop.
  • This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name: batch_file_assoc
  • Click on your Start Menu - > Run.. -> Type:
    regedit.exe /s "%userprofile%\desktop\batch_file_assoc.reg"
  • Reboot your computer.
Please then run the previous registry script again.

Also take a new DDS log.

With Regards,
The Panda

Ok, I ran the batch_file_assoc, I typed "regedit.exe /s "%userprofile%\desktop\batch_file_assoc.reg" into Run..... restarted and then tried to open the fix again and still it just opens the notebook up. Even if I right click and click on merge it does the same thing. I still ran another DDS and here is what it gave me: Thank you for your help again :thumbup2:

Hello.

Let's try this.

Install ERUNT
This tool will create a complete backup of your registry. After every reboot, a new backup is created to ensure we have a safety net after each step. Do not delete these backups until we are finished.

Do not use the NTREGOPT that comes with the installation package.
  • Please download erunt-setup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click erunt-setup.exe. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run As Administrator." Follow the prompts and allow ERUNT to be installed with the settings at default. If you do not want a Desktop icon, feel free to uncheck that. When asked if you want to create an ERUNT entry in the startup folder, answer Yes only if you are using Windows XP. You can delete the installation file after use.
  • Erunt will open when the installation is finished. Check all items to be backed up in the default location and click OK.
You can find a complete guide to using the program here:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt.txt

When we are finished, you may, remove ERUNT using Add/Remove Programs.

Download and Run OTMoveIT
  • Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer to your desktop. If you have already used the program, there is no need to download a new one.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. If you are running on Vista, right click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below. Do not copy the word "code".
