All of a sudden Vista has started crashing. This started a few hours ago. At first I thought it was a program, but now it's crashing on several different programs (e.g., Quickbooks, Office 2007, Firefox). What should I do or what diagnostics should I run? this is annoying and scary!

Good Lord! There's a whole slew of them. The first three are VSS, then several Application Hangs, and a slew of others. is this normal?

No, but that's why you're having problems.
Post thedetails of the most recent ones that you think are associated with the crash and we'll work it from there.

Here is the first one:

The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout.

The second:

The store C:\Users\Harold\Documents\My Outlook\Outlook.pst has detected a catalog checkpoint.

The third:

The store C:\Users\Harold\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst has detected a catalog checkpoint.

The fourth:

Failed to determine if the store is in the crawl scope (error=0x8001010d).

The fifth:

Failed to get the Crawl Scope Manager with error=0x8001010d.

The sixth:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040154.

Operation:
Instantiating VSS server

Is this enough?

There's nothing definitive in the messages that you've posted. Can you locate any memory dump files on your system (files ending in .dmp)?
If so, try the procedures at this link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/176011/how-to-receive-help-diagnosing-blue-screens-and-windows-crashes/
Post the results of the analysis here and that may give us some more clues.
