I have a Dell laptop (5 years old) that goes through the following "loop": (a) turn on >>Dell screen>>DOS window: "Select the operating system" (both choices are XP)>>Windows blue screen with XP Flag and "moving cursor" (moves left to right in small window)>>( B ) a blue window with "Windows XP" and a USER icon, and "to begin, click your user name" and "Turn off computer" with red/off icon in lower left corner. © if I click on the USER icon it quickly starts "shutting down", i.e. it quickly flashes "Loading your personal settings" and then instantly flashes "Logging Off" and then in a few seconds states "Saving your settings". During this "shutting down process" you hear the "shutting down" sounds and, (I think) the "loading" sounds. At the end of the "Saving your settings" the screen returns to ( B ) above, (i.e. the blue screen with the USER icon etc. The "Turn off Computer" in the lower left seems to work normally.
Essentially it is in a "loop" in which when you try to move beyond the "blue screen" by clicking on the USER icon, it flashes for a second "Loading your settings" but instantly starts "shutting down" and ends back at the "blue screen". The only other choice seems to be to shut it off and begin all over again.
I have tried tapping F8 when initially turning it on and I do get the DOS screen "Windows Advanced Options Menu" but don't know what to do next. I haven't used this computer for months because of this problem. I suspect I'll have to reformat the hard drive (not a big deal for me)and start from scratch but thought I'd ask you guys first for advice before I reformatted.
Thanks for any help. You guys are great!!! PS: I accidently got the yellow "faces" in the text and don't know how to remove them.
