On Windows 9x platforms the best antivirus is Avast!. It uses less resources compared to other antivirus solutions and has inbuilt anti-spyware. and its FREE for home use. http://www.avast.com/

As far as Firewall is concerned, you can use FREE versions of Outpost, http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/index.php.

You can also try, Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 (the last version before Symantec bought them off). http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/

You can always test how your machine is protected by the firewall on websites like McAfee's hackerwatch http://www.hackerwatch.org/probe/

I would say and it's true that not avast but Avira antivirus is the best antivius software available in the market today. Here is the link:www.free-av.com/
There is a tie between the best firewall between sunbelt and comodo firewall. The links are: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-...sonal-Firewall/ and http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/dow...d_firewall.html.

If you don't believe me that avira is the best antivirus then go to this page: http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02
And for the firewall reviews go here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-firewall.htm

And if you still don't believe be then research for yourself and you'll see that I'm right. Also Avira will never slow down your computer. I myself use it on a 450mhz machine woth 320mb of ram and barely even notice if it's there. And it blocks viruses and malware that are so sophisticated and you can even imagine that they are actually there. It's the best.

Having seen where this query was posted, you could have a problem with products for your operating system no longer being supported. The latest Comodo Internet Security is not for pre XP Windows.

For Best antivirus, so far from my little experience with being a desktop support guy to 200+ users in our office, maybe its NOD 32 for me. Well there's an awful lot of good AV apps out there but this had me standing for 2 years straight without any virus bug downs (infections gets detected and stopped right away).

For firewall, err, not so sure.

PS, why not make this thread a poll or something..so you'll see the results by votation and read the "why" part on their posts...

Actually, just because it has best detection rates doesn't necessarily mean it's "the best". I guess it depends on what you mean by "the best" though.

Cons of Avira Personal would be: sluggish updates, no web shield (only pro version has it, and even so it slows down browsing much more than avast ( so i've heard)), annoying pop-up telling you to buy their premium version, no antispyware protection , can't do a boot-time scan like with avast, & can't customize each individual shield.
Avast can do all the above features Avira can't, more reliable/ trouble-free updates, & no pop-ups trying to get you to buy their products.

I'm not saying avast doesn't have its cons though. Just saying that detection rates don't necessarily tell the whole story. Depends on user preference / needs really.

Also, avast! doesn't take that much more resources than Avira. And avast! supports older Windows OSs, while Antivir does not.

Just my opinion.

how do i make a poll

I believe you'll need to start a new topic. In the new topic screen, under the "Post New Topic" button you should find a number of options, one which allows you to make a poll.
