Open My Computer
Right click on the C drive
Click on Properties
When the box opens click on the Tools tab at the top

Where it says Error checking click on Check Now...

When the box opens put check marks in the little boxes by,
Automatically fix file system errors
Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

You will get a message " Can Not be performed...Needs access... yadda, yadda"
Click Yes
Restart the computer & let it start to the desktop on it's own.
It will take a few for the scan to complete & the computer start to the desktop.
Be patient & let it finish.
When you are back to the desktop try the defrag.

Restart it in Safe Mode,

Turn it off
Turn it back on & start tapping the F8 key
You should get a screen with startup options
[May take a few tries to get it]
Use the arrow key[s] to hilite Safe Mode
Press Enter
If given the option start as Administrator
Start to the desktop

While you are there see if you can do a full virus scan
When that is finished try setting it to run the disk check .

That message (unable to complete check...at this time) is routine. If you read the rest of the message, it tells you that the check can be run on the next reboot and asks for a Y).

You cannot run a chkdsk on the C: partition from within the C: partition, which is why the user typically reboots and lets the check run before the desktop loads.

Did you do as hamluis suggested and reboot when you get that message?

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.
