I have Windows XP Professional SP3 on an HP Compaq, every time I try to shutdown Windows it goes to the welcome/shutdown screen logs off then stays on "Windows is shutting down" forever (literally I've waited up to a week for it to turn off!). I have to turn it off with the power button every time.
I was wondering if there was a patch or something to fix it.

Just a start point...Troubleshooting Windows XP Shutdown Issues - http://www.theeldergeek.com/shutdown_issues_in_xp.htm

I suggest scrolling down to the section where XP hangs at shutdown.
