Downloaded and executed a file I shouldn't have. Immediately, explorer.exe started dying and then restarting, over and over again. AVG Free disabled itself and will not run or reinstall. Spy Sweeper corrupt -- won't uninstall or reinstall. SuperAntiSpyware corrupt and won't reinstall. System restore has no restore points, and they were present just a couple of days before this started.

I could manually try to load explorer.exe from task manager [file, new task]. i could also run Ad-Aware, which I ran multiple times, kept finding 5 Vundo trojans, then 9 Vundo, over and over again. Even though it said it removed them, they kept reappearing.

MSIE will not go to designated web sites, apparently hijacked by the trojans. It defaults to a fake looking MS search result page, which I have not clicked on, because it looks fake. I am writing this in Safari, which I happened to have on this machine.

I tried to run Windows Malicious S/W Removal Tool, but it did not seem to run, unless it ran in the background with no messages whatsoever. I ran ATF-Cleaner.exe, which seemed to work. MBA-M would not install. Ran ESET Online scanner, but did not read instructions closely enough and deleted the trojans it found. Here is that log:

After running ESET Online scan, explorer.exe seemed to work more stably, but I still couldn't install any new applications. I ran jv16 PowerTools 2009 to see if that might fix the registry problems, but after that explorer went to hell on me again.

Ad-Aware scan reflects virtumonde, with 5 registry keys identified:

Root: HKCR Path: clsid\{6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}
Root: HKLM Path: software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks Value: {6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}
Root: HKCR Path: clsid\{6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}
Root: HKLM Path: software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks Value: {6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}
Root: HKLM Path: software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\browser helper objects\Value: {6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}

Ad-Aware says it removes [or quarantines] these exploits, but they reappear on subsequent scans. AVG Free is corrupt and will not run or reinstall. SuperAntiSpyware is corrupt and will not reinstall. Webroot Spy Sweeper is corrupt and will not uninstall or reinstall. Ad-Aware is the only one that will run, and it won't remove the exploits it finds [or they are recreating themselves]. Combofix will not run. Malwarebytes anti-Malware will not install or run.

Please download Dr.Web CureIt to the Desktop:
  • Double-click the launch.exe or cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, please do a re-scan.. This time, choose Complete Scan
  • Click the green arrow button at the right, and the scan will start.
  • After the scan finished, click Select all
  • Click on Cure and choose Move incurable
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click File and choose Save report list
  • Save the report to your Desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit. Reboot your PC in Normal Mode, and post DrWeb.csv in your next reply (Open it as Notepad)

Thanks for the reply. I'm running the Dr. Web Scanner complete scan, which is about halfway done, and it's been going for about 5 hours now.

Question: I have been unable to unload the AVG and Spy Sweeper the normal way. The computer is just not cooperating. Should I use Task Manager to try to kill the processes associated with those applications? Are there services associated with those apps I should manually stop? In this computer's current condition, I'm afraid that's the only way to make sure they are not running in the background.

The computer is much more stable after running Dr. Web [cureit.exe]. Explorer is staying on screen, and the processor/HD seems to run more quickly and efficiently. I have not tried to run MSIE, in fear that opening it will renew the trojans. I'm writing this using Safari.

Combofix downloaded but will not run. First, combofix popped up a message that AVG was still running. I found and at least attempted to stop the AVG service. I didn't get that warning again, but combofix still won't run. When I doubleclick the icon, I get the following pop-up: 32788R22FWJFW\hidec.exe

Message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the file.

Here's a new HJT log:

My sense is that I'm finally starting to get on top of this problem. Advice?

I couldn't get combofix to run. See one of the above posts for the error message that popped up when I tried to run the app.

I'll try that, but it'll be tonight when I get home.

The computer seems pretty stable/back to normal. I was able to set a restore point, MSIE is functional. On the other hand, I tried to reinstall AVG 8.0 build 237. The install failed with this detail message:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
Error 0x80070005

Any thoughts?
