Hello,

I am a transfer from the "Am I infected?" forum. I have been helped by rigel, who directed me here.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...oogle&st=15

Basically, Google and Yahoo searches in IE7 yield only links to ad-sites. The searches are fine in Mozilla or using my ISP's Google-powered search engine.

I've run all the recommended malware removal programs with no results. I've run DDS as instructed, the log is attached. Thanks for your help. I am really curious what is causing this.

Philip

It was reported to me by Malacide that my search engine issues were due to a malwear file called wdmaud.sys. I did a lot of research on the net about this and it is correct. The malwear file existed in my C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder, where it should not be. The correct wdmaud.sys file should be in the C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers folder, and has a Microsoft tag. None of the malwear scanners appear to be picking this thing up.

I backed up all my files, deleted the bogus file, rebooted, now all is well. Hopefully the scanner apps will be start picking this thing up soon.

Disclaimer: I don't advocate anyone doing this, especially if you are uncomfortable deleting system files. Delete the wrong file and you system could be toast.

Apparently I spoke too soon. Now what happens is that the search results look legitimate, but when I click on the link I get redirected to an ad site. When I hit the back button, I then get to the correct site. Crazy. :thumbup2:

Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

Sorry for delayed response. Forums have been really busy. If you still need help with this post a fresh dds.txt log, please.

No problem. I have not been able to get DDS to work. It flashes a command window and that is it. It worked without a problem before, so I am not sure what could be the issue. The only difference, that I can think of, is AVG8? I had that completely removed before.

I've still been unable to get DDS to work. I made sure AVG was not running in the background. I can't think of a script blocker that may be stopping DDS from running.

Hi,

Let's try another tool.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized, if not you'll find it in c:\rsit folder)

Hi

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader!

Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop. Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt). Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleanerę by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Read the requirements and privacy statement then click on the Accept button.
  • The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    Archives
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • Click on Save Report As....
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Save this report to a convenient place.
  • Copy and paste that information & a fresh HijackThis log into your topic.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.

Hi again,

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hi

Upload following files to http://www.virustotal.com and post back the results:
c:\program files\paths.ini
c:\program files\gms31.ini

Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe

Close browsers and fix checked.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/204649/google-and-yahoo-search-results-hijacked/

Collect::[4]
c:\windows\ypcftjf.cdt

Driver::
Lipcpp

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
"aux"=-

Save this as
CFScript

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
You will be asked for permission to send items to further analysing. Let ComboFix do so. Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file, a fresh hjt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log in your next reply.

The file scans by Virus Total did not report any thing malicous. I post the reports below.

ComboFix gave the blue screen with a serious system error involving a file called "catchme.sys".:thumbup2:

I'm now downloading MalwareBytes program.
