Posted 17 February 2009 - 01:26 PM

My computer, just this morning, started giving false results to search requests through search engines in both FF and IE. The top 10 results always link to suspicious sites such as citysearch.com or scanvirus.us or some such thing, and the search results take longer than they usually do to show up on the screen. I am sure I have a hijacker. I have used Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware tool, which removed 26 infected items, but the hijacker is still present.

Thanks.
Bill Grimm

I looked around here, and decided to try running ComboFix, since it is often suggested for this issue. After running ComboFix, I no longer have the problem. Here is what ComboFix came back with:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K

KoanYorel-

As you should have seen from my second post, I fixed the problem later that same day using the ComboFix software and the instructions for its use available on this website. Before you start berating me about using these tools unsupervised (as everybody who does is), I suggest you get enough people on staff to address these issues in a more timely manner. Which is not to say I don't thoroughly appreciate the work you folks are doing, because I do. And I thank you.

We wouldn't berate you. Just glad you and the system survived.
The warnings re ComboFix provided are those of the program author.
A tour of the site will show how many have messed up their systems using the program unsupervised.

I did see you said that you had fixed the problem, but you included the log also so we wanted to ensure you weren't having other problems.

Funny thing about a site comprised of all volunteers - members and staff.
No time cards, no duty schedule, no pay - just enjoy oneself.
Those that commit to working the HJT are in a never ending fight to fix, learn, fix, etc....

Anyway, thanks for getting back with us.

This thread is now closed.
