Help and Support from the Start menu does nothing, no error message. Help/Contents and Index from applications does nothing, no error message. It never has worked on this Dell Dimension 9150.

Interesting note: In Microsoft Word 2002 it opens up Help, then I can search for something and it brings up a list of valid topics, but when I click on one it just opens a blank Help window.

Windows XP Home, Version 2002, SP 3

Thanks for any "help" you can provide!

Try the fix at Kelly's Korner.

Restore Help and Support Service - #235 on the left.

Right click on it and save the .reg file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect.

With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

I followed your instructions, restarted, and it still does not work.

Upon clicking Help and Support from the Start menu it now gives this error message:
"Windows cannot find 'helpctr.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file..."

I did a search for helpctr.exe and found it in:
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$

Help in Word 2002 still behaves as described in original post. Help still does not work in other applications.

Thanks, Joe

Try running the System File Checker.

I ran SFC with the /scannow switch. It ran fine, it seemed, but I couldn't see that did anything. I restarted after, but it still does not work, gives the same error described in my last post. Any more ideas?

Thanks, Joe
