Helllo.

I'm having some trouble with my Laptop.. running Windows Vista Home Premium, 64-bit.

For some reason, I am unable to download files in Safe Mode with Networking and am worried that this may be due to an infection... I was hoping someone could help me determine if my PC is infected or if this is some quirk of Vista or something.

Basically, when I save a file (no matter where) - the file disappears immediately. I can see the file there as it is downloading if I open the folder up, but the moment I get a "Download Complete" - it vanishes. I did a complete search of my PC using Start > Search > Files & Folders, but nothing (I made sure to look in all local hard drives, as well as checking the "System areas" checkbox.) If I leave the downloads box open (Firefox), I can right-click the download but both Open and Open Containing Folder are grayed out and not selectable. It does the same thing if I download the file in internet explorer.

Downloading works fine in normal mode, so I'm really at a loss as to why this is happening.

So far, I've scanned in safe mode with:

- Spybot S&D
- SuperAntiSpyware
- Ad-Aware
- Windows Defender
- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

And none of them find anything. I also scanned in normal mode with all of the above, but with AVG8 Free included.

MOD EDIT:

Two other topics with similar issues:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/203958/vista-issues-not-downloading-wmi-mcafee-confusion/ ? McAfee corruption
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/203020/can-not-download-anything/ AVG corruption

I suspect:
- an infection
- a Windows Update that doesn't play well with A/V or Firewall software
- an amazing coincidence
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
