AVG INSTALLATION ERROR 0x80070005 RESOLUTION
These steps were sent to me by AVG, and my installation finally worked. If you are not comfortable with editing the registry manually (as others have advised), I suggest you use the safer method below. I added some Vista and McAfee advice after step 4.
If you are installing AVG and the installation process fails, there are several steps you can take to install AVG successfully.
1. Make sure you are installing AVG under an account with Administrative rights
This step is vital for correct and successful installation, since AVG needs to copy some of its files into folders, which are not accessible by an account with User permissions. 2. Always use the latest AVG installation file
AVG program is being improved continuously, including the installer which is responsible for correct installation process. Moreover, using the latest installation package eliminates the need to download larger program and virus base updates immediately after installation. 3. Close all running programs, disable security applications
Before running the installation file, please close all unnecessary running programs and make sure that there is no security application which might interfere with the installation process. Typical examples of programs preventing successful AVG installation are anti-spyware utilities and registry monitors/cleaners, which are preventing access to Windows registry. AVG needs to be installed also into registry to allow the functionality and protection it was designed to offer.
4. Remove possible conflicting applications
If you are using an application which might be in conflict with AVG, please disable it or uninstall it completely before running the installation. In general, AVG may conflict with such application, that provides similar or same functionality as one of the AVG components. This is especially important for other programs with one or more of these features:
real-time protection against viruses (same as AVG Resident Shield)
monitoring or control of network traffic (same or similar to AVG Firewall)
checking or filtering of e-mails (same or similar to AVG E-mail Scanner)
checking of websites, web content filters (same or similar to AVG Web Shield)
In Vista, open the Windows Security Center (Start-> Control Panel) and turn off Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and User Account Control.
If you have ever had McAfee on your computer, you must take extra steps to ensure that it is fully removed.
1. Uninstall McAfee Security Center from the Control Panel, and reboot.
2. Download and run MCPR.exe removal tool from: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licens...atches/MCPR.exe
, and reboot.
3. Delete any McAfee folders you find in C:\Program Files and C:\ProgramData.
To do this in Vista, you may need to take ownership of the files you can't delete and give yourself full permission in the command prompt. To change ownership and permissions, visit http://www.davescomputertips.com/articles/...le_in_vista.php
*NOTE: In the command prompt, file paths with spaces must be enclosed in quotation marks. For example, to take ownership and control of a file in C:\Program Files, type:
takeown /f "C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSC\msc.exe"
icacls "C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSC\msc.exe" /grant yourusername:f
5. Disable UAC (Windows Vista only)
On Windows Vista, the function User Account Control may in some cases create a copy of specific AVG files in a virtual folder. This limits AVG functionality after the installation. The UAC function can be disabled in Windows Control Panel -> User accounts -> Turn User Account Control on or off -> uncheck "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" -> click OK button and restart the computer.

open Start -> Run or Search -> type "%tmp%" -> OK
find and attach the file "AVG8INST.LOG"
IF YOU GET AN ERROR 0x80070005 WITH FAILED INSTALLATION, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
The issue with AVG installation is most probably caused by the insufficient access rights to the AVG related files or registry entries. In such case, please take the following steps to rectify this issue:
1. Download the latest installation file from this webpage: http://www.avg.com/download?prd=aav
When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the internet, but click the "Save" button and choose a location, where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the "Desktop".
2. Please check whether you are logged under some account with administrative rights. For more details, please visit this FAQ: http://www.avg.com/faq?num=11963. Download the AVG service utility from this location to your computer (we recommend saving it to your "Desktop") and run it: http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/support/re...ess_avg8_en.exe
4. Restart your computer and run the AVG installation, which should proceed properly now.
5. If you encounter any further issues while installing AVG, we ask that you send us a new copy of the file called "avg8inst.log" which can be found in the "TEMP" directory of MS Windows.
Windows Vista: C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Local\Temp
Or: Start -> Run -> %temp%
6. Also please attach the "permavg.7z" file. The file will be created in the same folder where the "reset_access.bat" file is stored. Please attach "permavg.log" if the "permavg.7z" is missing.
Some files or folders could be hidden by default. This can be changed in Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View tab -> Show hidden files and folders. (The location and names can vary, depending on the operating system version).
