After an unexpected crash following a BSoD I ran a thorough Avast scan which detected one infected file and moved Win32:Wimad[Trj] to the chest. However I think this trojan is re-activating on startup, because after re-booting IE is continually crashing, Firefox is running terminally slooooow and in general my whole system is struggling badly. System restore attempts have all failed.

I'd be really grateful if someone could help me remove this bugger from my system :thumbup2:

Hi simmy555,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum and sorry for the delay. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.
  • Tell me if you have run any tool or have made a major change to the system since your last post. Also tell me how is the current condition of your computer.

  • To get an idea about the current condition of you computer download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Set the list of files/folders created to 3 Months and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open.
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized).
  • Please copy and paste the content of just log.txt to your reply. No need for info.txt

    Note 1: If you have difficulty finding the log, the logs is in this folder: C:\rsit

    Note 2: The tool takes not more than one minute to scan the system.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return.

Hi farbar!

Thanks for responding,

Since my original post I believe there has been a minor windows update but other than that no major changes. I've not used any tools either, although I did forget to note in my original post that I did run a Kaspersky online scan which came up clean. Currently my major symptoms are still browser related.... Chrome causes BSoDs every time I try to use it, IE crashes repeatedly and FF is stable but incredibly sluggish, far more than usual. Seamonkey is the most stable of all.

Here's the log

Hi again,

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

Removal Instructions

Please perform the steps fully and in the order they are written.
  • Empty all p2p (limewire, Azureus, etc...) download folders. They might contain infected files. Please avoid using these p2p applications until the system is clean. Using these applications at this stage might lead to reinfection or infecting other users.

  • You have the program Spybot S&D (Teatimer option) running on your machine. We need to disable TeaTimer so it does not interfere with the fixes we are about to do. This will only take a few seconds.
    • First disable TeaTimer:
      • Run Spybot-S&D
      • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
      • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
      • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
      • Restart your computer.
      Instruction is also here: How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup

      Note:If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

    • Then download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "Save Link As").
      • Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.exe and let it run.
    Note: The Teatimer should be kept disabled until I give you the clean sign.

  • I see on your log that PartyPoker and Pokerstars are installed on your computer:

    These programs are known to be related to adware/spyware. More information here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/...PartyPoker.html
    To uninstall it:
    Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
    Please doubleclick the "Programs and Features" icon.
    A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
    Uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

    PartyPoker
    Pokerstars

    Also remove the folder in bold: C:\Program Files\PartyGaming

  • Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost;<local>

    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.
    Extra Note:
    If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

  • Please run Hijackthis. Click Do a system scan and save a logfile then copy and paste the content of the log to your reply.
Please include in your next reply:
  • The log of MBAM.
  • A Hijackthis log.

Ok all done, no problems with any of that. I never use Limewire or Azureus so will probably just uninstall them both and be done with it. I've uninstalled both Poker sites, Poker stars I never use, but I have been playing on Party Poker for several years now, is there no safe way to still use it?

Chrome seems to be stable! everything else seems to be running just fine now, thank you!!!

Here are the logs.

I have been playing on Party Poker for several years now, is there no safe way to still use it?

Some sites just name it adware:
http://www.spywaredata.com/spyware/threat_...OKER/result.php

Here it is called a low risk software:
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threa...;threatid=44086

With what I new before about Party Poker there seems to be a shift from potentially unwanted or undesired program to a low risk software. So if you don't mind the ad part of it you may remain playing it.

Note on using MBAM:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\popcaploader.popcaploaderctrl2 (Adware.PopCap) -> No action taken.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\popcaploader.popcaploaderctrl2.1 (Adware.PopCap) -> No action taken.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{e4e3e0f8-cd30-4380-8ce9-b96904bdefca} (Adware.PopCap) -> No action taken.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{fe8a736f-4124-4d9c-b4b1-3b12381efabe} (Adware.PopCap) -> No action taken.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Typelib\{c9c5deaf-0a1f-4660-8279-9edfad6fefe1} (Adware.PopCap) -> No action taken.
.

Again these Adware registry items might be a part of PopCap Browser which is installed on your computer.
However to remove those entries, after running Malwarebyte's scan you should make sure those entries are selected and click Remove Selected.

But if you decide to keep and use these programs (PartyPoker and Popcap Browser) you should add them to the exemption list of you antivirus and antispyware programs. Otherwise they remove some entries while the program itself is not uninstalled and that might cause system malfunction. But don't add them to the Internet trusted zone. If you add those sites to the safe zone, it means that the traffic created by these sites won't be checked by security checkpoints any more. While these site are safe to visit they might not be safe all the time and their traffic better pass through the security checkpoint.

The log looks good and if you don't have a question I wish you happy surfing and gaming!
