Hey,

Yesterday, I decided to give up on Windows Server 2008 after a series of serious crashes and go back to XP. I formatted my internal hard drive and installed XP as all my files are backed-up onto a Maxtor 500GB external drive. However, when I tried to use the external HDD, windows wouldn't recognise it, so I went into settings and assigned it a drive letter. However, now, I can't open the drive as windows wants me to format the drive before it'll let me use it. However, I don't want to format the drive as it has all my files on it.

I've heard of a program called Partition Doctor 3.5 that can repair the boot section of the drive but it costs and I really don't have money to spend on a program (student xD) so I was wondering if anyone knows of any applications that have this feature that I could use?

Thanks.

First I would suggest running a diagnostic test on the Maxtor drive. You can download this from here: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools
Then, check our Freeware topic for this sort of software: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic3616.html
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
