I'm running Windows XP on an HP laptop that used to belong to my dad. I've been cleaning it up and getting it up to date, and it's had a hiccup here or there (and for some reason when InstallShield says there are updates, it won't actually let you /do/ anything about it) but in general it runs well. Yesterday I went to http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupd...v6/default.aspx and downloaded the high priority updates that were available. When I restarted the laptop for the updates to take effect, I received the following error message upon start-up, before the Windows XP logo appears:

SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Drive Disk 2: ST9120821AS-(S1)

Warning: Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.

I have no idea what could have caused this. The laptop is barely more than a year old. Avast and Malwarebytes found nothing wrong (both scans were rerun in Safe Mode). Here's the HijackThis log. Any help would be really appreciated, especially since I have no way to back up the data on this laptop (though thankfully there isn't much to lose). Thanks so much!

I just wanted to add that I understand that hardware problems are typically not caused by malware, but this was so sudden and the computer still works so well that I just want to be sure this isn't caused by some sort of malware. The computer's hard drive does have a small partition for Recovery, which I assume is what is being referred to as 'hard drive disk 2". If the Hijack This log is clean and the hardware problem is being caused by something else, do you know anywhere or anyone you could possibly refer me to for help? I heard that if the problem is just with the recovery partition, as long and it's never actually used things might be okay.

If this turns out to have nothing to do with malware, I'm sorry that I wasted your time. I know that you're all really busy and I really appreciate you taking the time to look this over for me. Thank you again!

Your logs look clean.

You are right that hardware problems are very rarely caused by malware. Please post in the appropriate hardware section of the forum.
