Hello:

First, I love this site! Glad to be a member now. Here's my question...

When I open Windows XP's "My Computer" folder (or any folder for that matter) and I type "c:" without the quotes, I get a listing of "file:/// <insert file directory here>. I am getting this for files I have already deleted, but they are still showing the path to the file. Of course, when I click the directory link, it says the file is not found.

I want to get rid or delete the reference to these files. Where do I do this? I have TweakUI but couldn't find an option there. Also, I tried deleting the RUN history etc. I would like to clear this cache manually, but don't know how.

Help!

Try CCleaner. I'm told if you delete the "recently typed urls" of IE it cleans it up for explorer also.

I guess the issue though is the history of the "directories". It seems that windows xp logs a directory link to every single file that exists or existed on the computer. Unfortunately, none of those were "typed" items. So, clearing cache's in the traditional sense hasn't deleted that directory history. Therein lies the problem!

I'll try CCleaner to see what happens....

I fixed it! Without CCleaner, I just disabled autocomplete in IE and that did the trick. No more file references in the My Computer (or any folder)! Thanks for the tip that led me in that direction!
