Hello all, I have been (quite scarily) charged with the IT duties among other things at a nonprofit museum and am trying to get one of our PC's whipped into shape. It has been freezing at startup and generally acting unstable (the previous user was a myspace and game site addict I think! :) ). My first course of action was running Spybot S&D, however I could not get it to load. After unistalling and reinstalling it by downloading it from another PC, and some other web research I am seeing now that there is malware out there that prevents you from searching spyware prevention/fix websites and also from running programs such as Spybot. I think that may be an issue for this PC as it always redirects me to a advertisment (b.s.) site when I click on search results trying to research this. So I have done a Hijack This log and am attaching below. I really appreciate your help on this one - something doesn't seem quite right!!! :thumbup2: THANK YOU!!!!!

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix.. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.. Please re-enable them back after performing all steps given..

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.

If ComboFix asked you to install Recovery Console, please do so.. It will be your best interest..

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply..

Note: DON'T do anything with your computer while ComboFix is running.. Let ComboFix finishes its job..

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Hello.. Your AVG7 is outdated and no longer supported by Grisoft.. It has been replaced by AVG8.. I strongly suggest you to uninstall AVG7.5 and replace it with AVG8.. More info below..

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0

Lets do an online scan... Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

Computer is acting much better THANK YOU A TON!!!

I have installed Symantec Antivirus 10.0 as we have 25 or so licenses for it here at the Museum. I'm actually not sure how AVG even got on this PC. Even though we bought the Symantec three or so years ago it does still get updates. Do you think this is an okay setup along with Windows Firewall or is this lacking against all the threats out there?

I think I can get my hands on a bunch of Norton 360 2.0 licenses for next to nothing (501©3 has it perks ;)) Think that is any better than the current setup?

Looks like the ESET came back clean - so does that mean we are in good shape???!! So how bad was this machine? THANKS A MILLION FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!!

Matt

Hello.. I'm honestly not familiar with Symantec/Norton products.. So, I could not give any comments on their software..

But as long as you have ONE antivirus, and also ONE firewall inside the computer, it will be good...

Symantec Antivirus doesn't come with firewall, so you might want to use a third party firewall instead of internal Windows firewall.. There's a lot of excellent third party firewall, but for the sake of simplicity, I introduce you these two free and excellent firewall.. Install ONLY ONE of them...

If you decide to have a go with Norton 360, it comes with their own firewall, so you don't have to use any third party firewall... Norton 360 is a complete security packages from Symantec..

Lets do some cleanup...

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to Desktop.
  • Make sure you have internet connection..
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
