HJT Log; Locked out of system settings

Help! I was attacked with several viruses over the weekend. I think I have cleared them up for the most part, but the fallout from the attack lingers on. I am having FOUR problems that I cannot seem to resolve:

1. Cannot perform search on the system. When I try to use the search tool I get an error message that says: "A file that is required to run Search Campanion cannot be found. You may need to run setup". There is KB article on MS site about this... I followed steps there, but problem still exists.

2. I cannot gain access to any of the MMCs (Computer Managment, Services, etc..). When I try to launch the consoles I get an error that says: "MMc cannot open the file c:\windowssystem32\<console>.msc

This may becasue the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have suffcient access rights to the file"

3. I am unable to change the wallpaper. When I go to dispay settings I cannot select a different wallpaper to display and the current wallpaper is the spyware no scare screen (WINDOWS ERROR System has detected spyware activity. Some system functions are blocked out.)

4. When I visit the MS update site I get a blank page so I am unable to download the most recent updates.

Hello cschinkel and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #2

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to c:\windows\system32
look for the following files and write down the names of each one present:hiden.exe
p2.ini
tmpf00.exe
mszx.exe
drct16.dll
vdnt32.sys
klogini.dll
i.a3d
fltr.a3d
redir.a3d
ps.a3d
w32tm.exe
cz.dll
hz.dll
wz.dll
klo5.sys

Write down the dates on the above files and then sort the file listing by date. Write down the names of any other files with the same date.

Step #3

Put your windows XP disk into the CD drive and reboot your computer from the CD. Choose R for Recovery Console when prompted.

After the boot is complete type the following command at the command prompt and press the Enter key:cd\windows\system32
Now type the following commands and repeat them for each of the files found in Step #2, following each line by pressing the Enter key (replace <filename> with the actual name of the file):attrib -s -h -r <filename>
del <filename>

When finished, take the CD out of the CD drive and type Exit and press the Enter key. Reboot normally back into Windows.

Step #4

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: drct16 - drct16.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #5

Please run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix", "clean" or "auto-clean".

Step #6

AdAware SE v1.06

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE v1.06:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Right-click on the list and choose Select All
  • Click the Next button to finish removing the items that were found
  • When finished, REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found
Step #7

Download CCleaner and install it. Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OldTimer,

First of all, thank you so much for taking the tie to help me! I began working on the items you suggested and ran into problems with booting from the XP CD. When I get to the recovery console I am prompted to enter the admin passord. I have entered the pw that I know has admin privs and several others, but cannot get in. I only get three tries before the system restarts (which takes about 10 minutes from the cd) so I have not made much progress. I have tried to change the admin pw, but of course I am locked out of all that sort of functionality. Any suggestions?

Also, when I was checking for the files you had me look for I came across a few items I wanted to ask you about. There were several folders under system32 that had the same date as some of the files. They are:

\Config
\System
\Drivers
\ActiveScan
\NtmsData

Are any of those of concern?

Also, there was a file not on your list that looks suspicious as well as several others with the exact same date and time. The suspcious file is Kevid231231aa1.ico and the other files are:

pinkkas.ico
COMMCOS2.DLL
vbrundll.dll
regsync.exe
VBUninstall.exe

Do any of those need dealing with?

OldTimer,

I think I figured out the Recovery Console problem... seem to be a known issue with Dell's. Based on a KB from Dell, I installed the RC locally from the XP CD and updated the spcmdcon.sys file with a newer version. I was able to log in to RC without being challenged. I will continue on with the items you told me to delete and get back to you with the results.

Hi cschinkel. That looks better but you have picked up a new CWS infrction so let's deal with that.

Download About:Buster.zip and unzip it to its own directory. Start AboutBuster and click the Ok button. Now click the Update button and then the Check for Update button. If an update is available click the Download Update button. When the updates have been downloaded close AboutBuster (do not run it yet).

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uninstal] regsvr32 /u /s image.dll
O15 - Trusted IP range: 81.222.131.59 (HKLM)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
  • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
  • Click the Update button to check for updates and install any that are available.
  • Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click "Save Log...". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
  • Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file and the AboutBuster log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

The link you gave me for the About:Buster download is returning a 404 error. I did a search and downloaded it from bleepingcomputer, but not sure it was rigt thing because it did not match your instructions. I did the scan and it did not find anything. Hi cschinkel. Your log is clean. How are things running? Any problems?

A few things to do yet:

Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping your OS updated you leave yourself open to many of the infections that cannot be installed on a properly updated system. I strongly recommend that you go to the Windows Update site and install Service Pack 2. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates. This will patch your system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which your present system has open.

I can see no anti-virus application running on this machine. An anti-virus program is your first line of defense against todays infections and without one you leave your computer open to anything and everything that is just waiting to infect your computer while surfing the internet or processing emails. I strongly recommend you follow the steps below and install an anti-virus program and a firewall.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

Thnak you for your help, but I think my system is still suffering. I still do not have access to the MMC consoles and I cannot get to the MS update site (checked all security settings, activeX is enabled, etc...). I am also not able to hit sites like gmail becuase they are not detecting ActiveX being enabled. The PC is also running really slow. Also, I have reservations about udating to SP2. I have heard it can cause more harm than good to the system in certain cases, is that true? Please help!!! I am about to resort to reformating!!!

Hi cschinkel. One of the problems with an outdated operating system is that it is open to every infection out on the net today. Updating to SP2 has no ill effects that I am aware of and MS has stopped supporting XP versions that have not been updated.

If you cannot use the MS Update site then you might have to resort to a repair install anyway. See the information here regarding how to perform a repair install:

Folow the directions for the particular version of XP that you have and then go and update to SP2.
