I have a Pioneer dvd-rw dvr-k12d in my sony pcg-k25 laptop (its old). The laptop has been working fine until a few days ago when i am not able to play any discs. When i put in a cd or dvd the drive starts to spin up and then my computer freezes until i eject the disc.
My system specs
Small chip that goes fast some spinning things a case, a mouse, and a keyboard and a wonderful rectanlge box of colors.

Typicallly...that might happen when the optical drive is unable to read the disk inserted.

Reasons for this inability vary, ranging from a dirty CD/DVD (usually the case in my situations) to a dirty lens on the drive itself...to a drive on its way out.

The fact that you state that it won't read any media...would probably eliminate the dirty media situation from consideration.

I would try one of the CD/DVD drive-laser cleaning disks, e.g., http://www.diguniverse.com/MEMORY-AND-BLAN...S/ALS23321.html
