I started having trouble with malware (mostly popups) a few days ago. (Win32.zafi.b was trying to get me to download a bogus program). I ran various scans (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and a Symantec Anti-Virus) which all eventually came up clean, and the problem seemed to go away.

Then, last night, I started noticing that Google links went to ads, rather than the right search results. Scan again, found one more virus, which it quarantined and deleted. Now, every scan I run comes up clean, but there's still something wrong with search engine results (Google & Yahoo both; FF & IE both). Search engines are basically unusable.

I think I have a virus still, but I can't find it, and I don't know if it's the same thing that I've been battling for a few days, or a different one.

Thanks for your help!

**edit: I just started getting popups again. Got blue screen of death and tried to run MBAM from safemode. I got an error message and the computer shut down. I think it was that DCOM server process launcher (??) had terminated.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

I'm changing all my passwords. I'll see a friend who can help me reformat next week.

But in the meanwhile, how do I kill and remove the trojan, and any other malware?

Hi JennX,

There's no sense trying cleaning if you're going to reformat anyway. You can only choose reformat or cleaning route here, not both.
