I've just begun to have problems with my HP DV1000 laptop. Whenever I click on the Turn Off Computer icon, the Turn Off Computer window pops up with the standard 3 choices... Stand By, Turn Off & Restart. When I click on any of these, nothing happens. The window closes and then nothing happens. Just started happening this morning. Any ideas??

You can run Error checking.
. Error Checking- This takes about 35 minutes.
Start - my computer - right click local disk © - properties - Tools Tab -
Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start -
This requires a restart to begin.

You can hold down on the power button for about 6 seconds and your pc should shut down.

I have found a program that works real well in shutdown my computer. Its called wizmo it's available at http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm if you copy the file into your "c:\documents and settings\UserName\" (where username is your user). then you can go to start>run and type in "wizmo shutdown!" (without quotes but with the !). This has been know to fix weird problems with shutdown.

Hope it helps.
