i have a problem on my work computer so i need this solved as fast as possible. i have been getting redirected after clicking on a link in google search. i have a message in red at the top of my browser that says things mentioning that my system is in danger and needs a full scan. i think it's antivirusxppro because i keep getting ads to their website. my desktop changes and i can't change it back (i was able to figure out how to fix it). i have a red button with a white x next to my clock . it has a popup saying t my computer is infected and it is recommending me to start a spyware cleaner tool. i restarted and i got no taskbar or desktop items (i started them manually). i tried downloading spybot search & destroy but i keep gettin a floating point error and panda and trendmicro online scanners make my ie freeze and ihave to close it. i can run eset so that's what i'm doing now. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

Hi,

i have a problem on my work computer so i need this solved as fast as possible

Not sure if you're aware how severly infected this computer is.
Since you are posting a log from a Company owned computer/work computer... There are a few things that need attention first before we proceed with this..

* You must inform your Supervisor immediately.

This because of:
  • Most company machines are connected into a network at some time or other, and your infection may compromise the security of that network.
  • If sensitive material is compromised by an infection, your company could be held liable.
* Your Company must give permission for us to give you assistance.

This because of:
  • We are not here to replace your company's IT Department. If there's an IT Department, then they are responsible to deal with this.
  • There may be sensitive material on your computer that your company would not want revealed in an open forum.
Also, since this is a computer used at work - the first thing I always advise is to back up important files you don't want to lose, this since malware causes a system unstable and it may happen that it suddenly won't boot anymore, because of the damage already present.

Your system is severly infected. Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show.
Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution.
So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused.

But, ESPECIALLY since this is a business computer and it's so severly infected - the only responsible action is a format and reinstall. This because the malware you are currently dealing with (backdoors and rootkit included) already compromised and damaged your computer. It also collected important info such as passwords in a meanwhile as well. And if you want to clean this up manually, there's no guarantee that you can trust this computer again even though logs won't show anything anymore and scanners come up clean.
Plus, on top, malware damages a lot.
That's why most ITpeople who are taking care of businesscomputers, format and reinstall anyway, since that's actually the best and especially the safest solution.
Also, since this is a business computer, it's normal that backups are taken at least once a week - so I assume you have backups as well.

Anyway, let me know what you decide. If you want to deal with this manually; then I'll guide you (but don't expect miracles). :thumbup2:

i have a backup of everything. and i'm the one that would be giving the permission but i don't really know how to fix this. this isn't the main computer so i'm not losing anything. you can go ahead. i have a new problem. my computer now looks like it's windows 98 or something. it's the gray taskbar. i actually want to change that back really quickly, this doesn't look professional lol.. i think i should post a new log because some things have changed so here it is. thanks for your help

Hi,

i have a backup of everything. and i'm the one that would be giving the permission but i don't really know how to fix this. this isn't the main computer so i'm not losing anything. you can go ahead. i have a new problem. my computer now looks like it's windows 98 or something

Not really sure if you have read my previous warning though... Since it's so severly infected, keep in mind that some things can't be fixed anymore - this because the malware may have damaged too much. Also, since it's so severly infected, you'll never be able to trust this computer again if you clean this up manually, unless you format and reinstall Windows. I find it a bit strange that you still want to clean this up manually while you have backups - and you're saying that you won't even loose anything.... a format and reinstall is still the fastest and especially the safest solution.

For a computer used for work, imho it's irresponsible to clean this up manually though, not only because of the damage, but mainly because of the safety. Keep in mind that all passwords and other info may be collected here and you put the entire company at risk because of this. Even though the computer appears to be clean afterwards and scanners come up clean - there's still no guarantee that it is really clean. Malware has changed a lot within a couple of years and it's much more nastier than a couple of years ago as well. (Backdoors, rootkits etc..)

Anyway, your choice ofcourse and we try to clean this up manually, but I really find this a strange decision..


I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..
I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed!
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install one first!!

* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/
This is a free Antivirus.

Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding.
Then reboot.
After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".
There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.
Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

In case you loose your Internet connection after running Avira,
Go to start > run and type cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type next in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
hit enter.

This should solve your broken connection.

oh. icouldn't read the first reply that well.. the internet kept closing so ijust read that ineed permission and backup. iactually just had a chance to get onto another computer and reread what you said. that sounds way too severe for me to do manually and i'll go ahead and reinstall xp. thanks for your advice. i hope this virus has not been able to get too many passwords but i will go ahead and change them all anyways. thanks again.

Hi,

Yes, it's quite severe in your case and I'm pretty sure that some legitimate files (userinit.exe for example) is infected here as well.
If you were only dealing with one piece of malware, I would say, Ok, let's clean this up manually, but in your case, you're dealing with several different types of malware, some nasty variants. :thumbup2:
And for a work computer, priority is to have a CLEAN computer afterwards which works properly again. Also, it would be irresponsible from me not to make you aware of the fact how serious this is, this especially since it's about a work computer.

Yes, you should change your passwords anyway, because they may be currently known. :)

Hope this wont happen anymore, so please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future. Extra note (in your case here)... Make sure you install an Antivirus this time and also update your Windows, because it was not up to dated either...
Also, Make sure your other programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.
