First off, first time poster saying great site you have here and thanks in advance for any help.

My computer is a Gateway 840GM running Windows XP Home Media Center Edition 2005 / SP2. I'm a Comcast cable modem customer and use the Comcast customer version of McAfee. I keep it up to date and never have it off. I also do weekly scans with Spybot Search and Destroy. I keep my Windows and McAfee software firewalls on all the time and my Comcast Tech told me there is also a small firewall built into their new RCA cable modem (but I doubt it). Using these tools I've been able to easily deal with any and all threats - until last week. I surf using mostly Firefox, sometimes IE and I keep them up to date. Oh, and several months ago I downloaded CCleaner but after seeing what it did I was too scared to ever try running it, LOL.

I was on vacation at home and was surfing the web. Saw a post ref downloading a movie. The post contained a preview JPG, which I clicked and it took me to one of those bug filled image hosting sites, sorry - didn't get the URL (but trust me - you don't want it!). Instantly started getting pop-ups leaking through my pop up blockers and signs of browser hijack and knew I had just been bombed, got no alarms from McAfee. Ran a complete scan in McAfee, found nothing.

Ran a complete scan via Spybot S&D. It showed infection by the usual suspects - Adrevolver, Doubleclick, Right Media and Statcounter, but also some new ones I hadn't encountered before:

Smithfraud-C.
Virtumonde
Virtumonde.generic
Virtymonde.sci

I started reading up on these and was pretty horrified, knowing what I was in for. I haven't had any blue screen / desktop modifications experiences but my browsers were clearly hijacked, opening all sorts of garbage sex, gambling and viral warning web pages. I did get one non-browser windows pop up advising me my computer is infected, buy this product etc - but just once.

Ran the fix these problems solution in Spybot S&D. Low and behold, it says it fixed them! Great, re-booted and they re-appeared. Oh boy. More web research, including this site.

I downloaded some fix tools and ran them with varying degrees of success. These were things like SDfix.exe, Smithfraudfix.exe, smithRem.exe, Vundofix.exe as well as some web page based scans. I couldn't boot into safe mode into either Admin or Owner accounts, so they weren't fully effective.

Aha, CCleaner, time for the big guns - I thought. I ran it totally and utterly, including it's immunize stuff. Voila now I can boot into safe mode, cool. Re-ran the above tools from both accounts while off line. A little bit better progress this time. Rebooted and ran Spybot S&D again, same core infections but a few fewer of the bad cookies stuff (Adrevolver, etc).

At some point during a reboot my system removed two copies ndwwt.dll which had been reported as bad.

Tried following some manual removal instructions I got off the web but had little success - I couldn't locate 99% of the files, DLL's, registry entries, associations, folders, etc.

Downloaded and ran Ad-Aware from both safe and regular modes while off line. Looked like it found and either quarantied or removed everything, cool. I got as radical with as I could, changed the "allow once" to remove or quarantine, etc. After a re-boot I started getting detection and successful quarantine alerts from McAfee. This was for Vundo and something else which popped too quickly to read but I think it was VLog or something similar - the fake codec thing associated with Smithfraud infections.

Ran Spybot S&D again, some changes, now shows:

Virtumonde.prx
Smithfraud-C.
Virtumonde

Egads! Has this thing evolved on me? What a beast!

Downloaded and ran Super AntiSpyware. Good scan with a lot of detections, reports a complete fix.

No, spybot still shows the above 3 culprits and once again says it's fixed them. But it hasn't.

At this point I have so many of the elements in quarantine and so many of the bug's registry keys deleted that they don't appear to be having much effect. I was still getting browser window opens but the pages wouldn't actually load. But it's obvious the machine isn't clear. Spybot S&D still detects the above 3 and sometimes other cookie based stuff spurned off by them. The machine is booting too slow and just acting slow when running. In addition my final windows boot up is screwy, menu bar items look screwy and squared off and it's gray instead of blu-ish like it was. Also the menu bar icons load in the wrong order now - McAfee loads first instead of last like it used to.

I'm certain if left to their own devices these little parasites will start having their way with my machine once again and I'd love to really get rid of them, period.

But I'm reaching the point of being at the end of my abilities and am reaching out here for help. I've considered trying rolling back some unknown, earlier restore point but knowing how these tend to infect those I sort of doubt it will work. I have the original restore DVD's I made when I bought the machine almost 4 years ago. I have backed up the really, really critical data I need but obviously, after 4 years of use there's about of 100 gigs of misc stuff and some good programs I'd prefer not to lose if at all possible...

Some logs below, and thanks again for any help you can provide - it will be more than appreciated. Sorry, I do have a lot of software on this machine which tends to bloat he logs. Oh, and I own a stout length of rope I'd like to contribute to the lynch mob when the authors of this garbage are finally located;

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Extra note: The combofix tutorial recommends to disable your Antivirus, in your case McAfee. For McAfee, I rather recommend to temporary uninstall it, because Mcafee causes a lot of problems with Combofix after reboot, this because McAfee enables again after reboot. So please temporary uninstall McAfee first, then reboot and then scan with Combofix.

Hi,

Almost done...
Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=""

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

The rest looks OK again.

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Wow! Thanks another million. Ran the above fixes and they worked well. Re-booted into normal mode after completion. After start up I exited Super Antispyware and Ad-Aware, then ran a scan with Spybot S&D. No longer detecting either Smithfraud-C. or and Virtumonde stuff. It did detect Right Media cookie bug. I had Spybot S&D. Apply a fix. Now running a complete scan with Ad-Aware, which will take some time to finish.

What should I run to do the final report for your analysis?

Thanks again, amazing progress - Ted

Hi,

It did detect Right Media cookie bug

Please don't worry about tracking cookies. You'll always get them and they will always return. This just depends what sites you visit.
Everyone has them. They are even present on the MSN startpage, Yahoo startpage...
You may also want to read next:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm

What should I run to do the final report for your analysis?

As a matter of fact, Combofix you used previously is the best report you could get anyway. This because it may list files and registry entries in the log that a scanner won't find/target yet.
So, if a combofix log looks clean again - and doesn't list any malicious loading points or files anymore, then you can be pretty sure that the malware is gone. If any additional scanner still find some "infected files" afterwards, then this means that these files are only leftover and can't/won't do anything.
Also, these files will then be removed without any problems, while before, if the infection was still active and running, they won't go, or reload again.

Glad I could help. :thumbup2:

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!

Yes! During the last interval I researched this Right Media nonsense and it's pretty invasive garbage which I was previously unaware of. OT, but it's outlandish that Yahoo has signed up with these web gangsters of advertising. I see there is litigation pending on both ends of Right Media, amazing. I filed a beef with Yahoo via their "answers" for using it, awful. I also have now blocked all third party cookies on all my browsers.

I am going to totally reconfigure all my security systems and firewall based bleeping's most excellent advice. Thanks for that, as well.

I have already applied some of the boot up fixes you good folks suggest and they have helped. What helped much more was combofix, my boot up time is now less than half of what it was before the computer got infected, so thanks for that, too! And watching combofix do it's thing was downright amazing. I wouldn't have dreamed that a little piece of innocent looking software like that could grab a Windows XP machine by it's power cord and shake the pimican out of it like that, very, very impressive.

You guys absolutely rock the clock. I had talked with a professional network MIS consultant computer security expert while at work yesterday. He sort of rolled his eyes and told me I'd never get it fixed, just format the drive (if you can) and start over. So much for the highly paid help...HA!

I cannot say thanks enough, seriously. I would NEVER have got this machine fixed without your timely and amazing assistance. If you have a boss there, please pass this onto him/her. As soon as I can I'll make a contrib to your site. A Google of thank yous to everyone there. I sing your praises.

Barring further discoveries I think we can consider this gigantic problem solved and cured. You can close the thread and the case. Thanks again from the bottom of my CPU.

Good to hear :thumbup2:

Extra note... I asked you previously to temporary uninstall McAfee, this because it interferes with Combofix. So, don't forget to reinstall McAfee again.
However - (and this is my opinion) - if I were you, and in case you didn't purchase McAfee anyway, I would replace it with another Antivirus. This because McAfee is a huge resource hog and that may also explain why everything was loading slower (not only because of the malware present). Also, McAfee is known to cause additional problems. Also see here: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/wha...fee-lately.html
In anyway, your choice ofcourse. :)

I'm not saying McAfee is bad, but if people are complaining about a slow computer in general + slow boot and I see McAfee installed, then McAfee is most probably the culprit. I'm also saying this because I see a lot of situations where the computer was infected. They have McAfee installed. We remove the malware, but their Windows is still running slowly. This is really confusing for the ones we are helping, because they think that they are still infected and even though we try to convince them that the malware is gone, they are having a hard time to believe it.

Glad I could help.

Oh yes...

I'm going through with a fine tooth comb all the help resources here on bleeping as well as your most excellent blogs.

McAfee has worked well for me on my comcast connection in the past. It has caught and destroyed a lot of bad stuff coming in on Limewire and while downloading from usenet newsgroups.

However, it's now obvious to me what a resource hog it is. Far worse, it obviously totally failed to prevent this hideous instance of Vundo / Virtumonde / Smithfraud-C infection, so that sort of speaks for itself.

I'll almost certainly leave it un-installed and going with one of the free products.

I'm curious if you suggest uninstalling or deactivating the built-in "Windows Defender" psuedo-firewall built into XP if I'm going to go with a third party software firewall?

I'm thinking of keeping Spybot S&D installed but not running, either Ad-Aware or Super Antispyware running live and one of the free software firewalls you good folks suggest. I have also downloaded the zip file for the hosts.mvp or whatever, love that concept - very cool.

And my word my friend, please, please, please don't ever get discouraged about your fine work. Not only have I learned volumes in this trying week but you saved my machine, representing about 4 years work of internet explorations, web research, personal health issues, professional and personal work.

AGAIN - A MILLION THANKS!!! - Ted

Ooops sorry not Windows Defender, but the firewall built into the Windows XP SP2 Windows Security Center. Should I leave that on if I'm going to use a third party firewall?

I'm guessing no, turn it off? Thanks in advance - Ted

Hi Ted,

For the Windows Firewall... If you're planning to install a 3rd party desktop Firewall, then I suggest to disable the Windows Firewall. And, normally, if you install a desktop Firewall, it automatically already disables the Windows Firewall anyway.
If you're not planning to install a desktop Firewall, then enable the Windows firewall.
If you're behind a router (with firewall included), it's not really needed to install a desktop firewall anyway. Then you'll have enough with the router firewall and Windows firewall :thumbup2:
