Hey everyone, I'm going to get to the point. I know about computers top to bottom, but what this is has me stumped. Without wasting times this is what I see when I boot up NOR can I change it.

If you cannot see it, it reads as follows:

Windows Error
System has detected spyware activity. Some system functions are blocked out.
Windows recommends you to clean your PC with a spyware removal tool.
This has to be done as soon as possible to prevent loss of data.

Below is my HJT Log, any feedback would be appreciated. (Also, I think system32/services.exe is something fishy.)

Hello elim and welcome to the BC forums. You are currently running an older version of HijackThis. Please click on the link below and download the most current version:HijackThis_sfx.exe
Delete your current HijackThis.exe file and double-click on the file you just downloaded and then click on the Unzip button to install the newer version. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ directory by default.

Start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here as a relpy to this topic and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Sorry about that one and before I post the log I did a very long scan with Super Ad Blocker and it found A.Worm-BG I believe the name is. It was removed but did not remedy the constant background and locked down access. So heres the LOG :thumbsup:

Edit: I'm not an idiot with computers but this looks a little suspicious lol, iegfxfrw.dll.

Hi elim. There are a couple of items to clean up in the log so let's do that. Then we will see what's left to fix.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

Hey OT! Good news and bad news I think just from my view of the HJT new log. I did what you said and the customized back ground was not the problem, the only thing there was current default which can not be deleted. I proceeded and scanned with Bit and eTrust, eTrust didnt find as much as Bit did. Bit really found everything and I would have to say 25% of it couldnt be removed by Bit. If you would like I will post that log for you, I saved it as a txt file in case you wanted to see what it found. As for eTrust what it found or lack there of was deleted. Anyways, heres the new HJT log.

EDIT: My background is back but it seems to be in 1024 instead of 800x600 which is what I used and my desktop area is still grayed out.

Hi elim. Your log is clean. Good job! How are things running?

I don't understand what you mean by your desktop and background. If they are not the way you want them then go into Control Panel>Display and change the settings to what you want them to be.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

I've yet to do any of these recent steps yet cause I'm in prime time of gaming lol. What I mean by the desktop is it's all blue now and I have no access to change it, it's all grayed out where the background choices are. Also, which firewall would you advise me to get or which do you prefer? Right now I'm using Panda Softwares firewall but it's on a trial which is running dry.

EDIT: Ok, did what you said but still am waiting for your answer to a firewall.

My Panda firewall is telling me this also:

The following program has recently been modifired and is trying to access the Internet.

Program name:
C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe

Descritpion:
NT Kernel & System

Note I do deny the connection each time. I'm also considering a fresh install of Windows XP.

Click here for a screen shot of it(you can also see what my background is stuck on now

Hey elim. Anyone of those firewalls is good. I use all of them on various machines and they all do a pretty good job.

As for the desktop, it sounds like you have some registry entries to restrict any changes. Try this.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document:

Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

Message = "To work correctly, the script will close" & vbCR
Message = Message & "and restart the Windows Explorer shell." & vbCR
Message = Message & "This will not harm your system." & vbCR & vbCR
Message = Message & "Continue?"

X = MsgBox(Message, vbYesNo, "Notice")

If X = 6 Then

On Error Resume Next

WshShell.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2\"
WshShell.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StreamMRU\"
WshShell.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop\"

WshShell.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\{32683183-48a0-441b-a342-7c2a440a9478}\BarSize"

P1 = "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\"

WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoBandCustomize", 0, "REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoMovingBands", 0, "REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoCloseDragDropBands", 0, "REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoSetTaskbar", 0, "REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoToolbarsOnTaskbar", 0, "REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoSaveSettings",0,"REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoToolbarsOnTaskbar", 0, "REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoSetTaskbar",0,"REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoActiveDesktop",0,"REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "ClassicShell",0,"REG_DWORD"

p1 = "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects\LocalUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\"

WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "NoCloseDragDropBands", 0, "REG_DWORD"
WshShell.RegDelete p1 & "NoMovingBands"

p1 = "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell"

WshShell.RegWrite p1, "explorer.exe", "REG_SZ"

p1 = "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\{32683183-48a0-441b-a342-7c2a440a9478}\"
WshShell.RegDelete p1 & "BarSize"
WshShell.RegWrite p1, "Media Band", "REG_SZ"

On Error Goto 0

For Each Process in GetObject("winmgmts:"). _
ExecQuery ("select * from Win32_Process where name='explorer.exe'")
  Process.terminate(0)
Next

MsgBox "Finished." & vbcr & vbcr & "Done"

Else

MsgBox "No changes were made to your system." & vbcr & vbcr & "User Cancelled"

End If

Save the document to your desktop as fixdesk.vbs and close Notepad. Locate the fixdesk.vbs file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it.

Cheers.

Unfortunately that didnt work and my desktop options still remain on lockdown. When I scanned with BitDefender there were at least 25 - 50% of the viruses that werent cleaned or removed, if you'd like I'll post the log from it, I still have it. -sigh- this is getting annoying now :thumbsup:

Hi elim. I'll bet yo have a Group Policy set to disable desktop changes. Let's clear any that might be in place.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg :

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Restart your computer.

As for the virus scan lists. If they are flagged as viruses then if the scan doesn't clean them up go ahead and delete them manually. Youmight have to boot into safe mode with some of them but that's ok too.

Cheers.
