Viruses are causing havoc in my browsers. Avira Free Edition reports I'm infected with TR/vundo.ggw and TR/Spy.Agent.wlf, involving files puzokaya.dll and ncgutc.dll in the system32 folder. McAfee doesn't even find any viruses on a scan, Avira is powerless against it, and Trendmicro's free scan quit before it was done. Please help!

Thanks!

Hi,

Your system is severly infected. Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show.
Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution.
So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start. Reason I am telling this is because when a system is so terribly infected and we try to clean this up manually, the damage that is already present may interfere with our removal attempts.

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Extra note: The combofix tutorial recommends to disable your Antivirus, in your case McAfee. For McAfee, I rather recommend to temporary uninstall it, because Mcafee causes a lot of problems with Combofix after reboot, this because McAfee enables again after reboot. So please temporary uninstall McAfee first, then reboot and then scan with Combofix.

Sorry for the delay in replying - I thought I'd get an email when you responded but I didn't (unless it went to my spam folder).

Since my laptop is so infected, and since we pretty much just use this old machine for websurfing, I'm wondering if it might be better to just wipe the hard drive clean and start over? Since we just use it for surfing now, all important data files are backed up elsewhere.

The laptop didn't come with an XP disc, just the phoenix firstware recovery software on the drive. Could you instruct me on the best way to clean the drive and start over?

I promise to check back more frequently this time!

Thanks,
Craig

Hi,

I'm wondering if it might be better to just wipe the hard drive clean and start over? Since we just use it for surfing now, all important data files are backed up elsewhere.

In that case, it's indeed the best choice. I would have done this as well. After all, a format and reinstall is still the fastest (in this case) and the safest solution.

The laptop didn't come with an XP disc, just the phoenix firstware recovery software on the drive. Could you instruct me on the best way to clean the drive and start over?

Don't you have a recovery cd either?
I don't know how to use the phoenix firstware recovery, but found their support site here: http://www.phoenix.com/en/OEM-ODM/Customer...ces/default.htm
Normally, you should have received the info as well toghether with your computer how to use it :thumbup2:

Once you've reinstalled Windows...

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

I believe the recovery software is on a separate partition of the hard drive, so not sure I can reformat the drive without blowing out the recovery software.

If I just follow the recovery instructions to restore the boot drive to Factory settings, will that eliminate all the viruses or do I need to do something else first?

Thanks again for all the help!

Hi,

Yes, it will.

Also, you only have to reinstall/restore/format on the C, so the recovery partition will stay untouched. :thumbup2:
