:thumbsup: Overwhelmed Mom is having fits because her new computer is so SLOW.... her ancient 'Pentium Pro' is a speed freak compared to new system. System specs, partial list of problems and copy of hijack log listed below. Any/All help would be much appreciated.


Dell Dimension 4700
P4 530 w/ HT 3.0 GHZ
512 ram 400mhz
XP PRO 5.1.2600 Service Pak2 build 2600

McAfee Security Center
Counterspy
Cable connection



Computer is SLOW..... way too much running in startup( try to get rid and it comes back) occassionally blue death screen, lots of lock ups, errors such as :Application Error Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module mclsp.dll, version 4.0.1.24, fault address 0x00004c3f.
 AND
Application Hang Hanging application IEXPLORE.EXE, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.



Below is copy of HijackThis log. Would appreaciate help with log and suggestions and what to do to tweak this bleeping computer before I give it a pitch and start using the old Pentium Pro with only 32 ram... it is supersonic compared to this DELL!

Hi overwhelmed mom and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see no signs of viruses or malware at this time. The log is clean.

A couple of things for you to look at and try:

1 - See what (if any) processes might be utilizing all of thecpu's time. To do this press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys at the same time and click on the Task Manager button. Then click on the Cpu tab and tehn the Cpu colum heading. This will arranging the running processes by how much of the cpu time they are using with the biggest users at the top of the list. The System Idle Process should be at the top under normal circumstances when no other actions are currently being performed. Look at the top 4 or 5 items listed and see what is there.

2 - Completely uninstall McAfee. McAfee will frequently develop a mind of its own and bog down a system trying to process something. After removing it run the system and see if things improve. After that, reinstall McAfee and that usually fixes any problems that were occuring.

3 - Post your issue in the XP forum and see what they have to say. There is a pretty wide base of users that with a vaariety of experience and situations that might have ideas on what is happening on your system

Thank you for posting . I have been out of town and off line for almost two weeks. Looked at my task manager and there are approx 45 processes showing up in list....most all show 00 or 01 cpu usage BUT THE very last process in list is system idle process and it is 99 ???? I will follow your advice and try postin in the xp group. I'm wondering if a lot of the problem is not all the bleep Dell pre-loads. Is there a way to trully wipe all the silly Dell programs out and just have XP PRO and programs I actually want? Thanks in advance , Overwhelmed mom :thumbsup:

Hi overwhelmed mom. the System Idle Process is the one that you want to be the highest. That means that no processes are hogging the cpu and the system is sitting idle and not doing anything.

I don't see alot of the Dell processes loading at strtup (although they do tend to have alot of uneeded programs that they put into a new computer). Another application that can cause system slowdowns is McAfee. It seems to be a resource hog and can sometimes bog down a system. Something you can try is to completely uninstall McAfee and see what that does for performance. If things are noticibly better then go with one of these free anti-virus programs:Cheers.
