I'm not sure if this is the right forum but...

About an hour or so ago I was helping my brother out with limewire, I had him sign on under his name but the program wasn't installed under his account, I told him to sign out and sign in under guest so he did, Limewire wasn't installed under guest either so then I signed in under my name and everything was gone. My desktop was changed back to default, All the programs I had installed were deleted, My pictures were gone along with all of my files. I'm not sure how this happened but alot of my important things disappeared. Is there a way to reverse this? I really want all of my files back.

Please help me out with this, Thank you.

Weird. Are you sure you signed in under the right account?
What OS are you using? What accounts do you have listed under user accounts?
On my XP computer, under control panel, USER ACCOUNTS.

If you look on your c:\ drive, do you have your programs listed under c:\Program files?
Under MY DOCUMENTS, are your files there?

You profile may have been damaged.
You could probably use System Restore if you are using XP.

Travis_C:
Just to eliminate the possibility that you have a virus, please run the following scan:

Make sure that it is set to clean automatically:

TrendMicro's HouseCall

You should try to delete any files that the scanner was unable to clean. Let us know what the scan found.

Are you using XP?

So can you find your files if do a search?

Start, search, for files or folders?

All the programs I had installed were deleted

Is this still correct?

or

all my programs are there

So can you still run your programs, or do the files exist on your c:\ drive, but are the icons gone.

Did you do the scan?

Yes, if I search for them I can find them.

The icons are there they just didn't appear on my desktop like they normally would, I still can't find any of my saved items though.

Trendmicro is still scanning.

After the scan, I would get you to do a System Restore... But, you mentioned your saved items are gone. By saved items, do you mean data,(pictures as you mentioned in an earlier post)?

Are any of your missing items in the Recycle Bin?

The scan is done and it found no infected files.

Yes, data such as text documents I need for work and my pictures are all gone.

No they aren't in the recycle bin.

The problem with the system restore is that it doesn't back anything up under My Documents.

I don't want to sound repetitive, but we are dealing with lost data.
If you do a search for a data file, can you find any?

Did you HIDE your files?

How to see hidden files in Windows

Are you logged in as an Administrator equivalent?

If I search I can't find my pictures or any text files I had saved and no, I showed my hidden files a while ago and there is still nothing there.

Yes I am.

I am not sure how you would lose your data like that. Is there a chance it was deleted by mistake??...chances are that it would have been in the recycle bin if that were the case.

What exactly do you see under MY DOCUMENTS? (if that is where you keep your files)

Why don't you run a System Restore? Bring it back to the last restore point. Hopefully that will be 24 -48 hours ago. Won't do anything about your data, but it might reverse whatever MAY be blocking you from seeing your files <--if they still exist.

What do you think?

Have you rebooted since this happenened?

Good-luck and post again,

Joshuacat

When I open up my documents I see: My pictures, filelib, My music and My videos.

When I click on my pictures all I see are sample pictures and when I open up My music I see sample music.

Okay, I'll run a system restore right now, Thank you for all of your help and speedy responses.

I'm still leaning to the "not the same account" theory. Sounds as if the account being started isn't the same one with all the data. Of course, I've seen a lot of weird stuff with XP.

What folders do you see under C:\Documents and Settings?
Did you check what accounts are listed as I posted above?
