Hello.

My computer unforunately became the victim of a virus/trojan attack today. This is not the first time that it has happened and I have succesfuly seemingly been able to use a combination of MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot SSD to remove things before. I did so again after this recent infection as well using the latest up to date versions. However, my gut is for some reason telling me that things may not be all clear. I ran HijackThis and got a log which seems to show some dubius entries in the output such as "AppInit_DLLs: karna.dat"

I've taken the steps listed in the Preparation guide and have the DDS logs attached

I'll be grateful for any assistance that can be offered to me. Here is the HijackThis log that alerted me as well.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.

If ComboFix asked you to install Recovery Console, please do so.. It will be your best interest..

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply..

Note: DON'T do anything with your computer while ComboFix is running.. Let ComboFix finishes its job..

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Hello and thank you for taking up my case.

I'm afraid I had some difficulties in running Combofix, no doubt primarily due to my ineptitude. The first time I ran it (I did make sure to turn off Antispyware and Firewalls) it seemed to get stuck at the point where it was trying to create a Restore Point. Me being the impatient fool, I killed the process and tried it again. But, it still didn't seem like it was working (kept seeming not to move past the first Combofix startup lines). So, I restarted my computer and then prepared and tried again (making sure to disable all antivirus and firewalls), and this time it seemed to work, but I noticed, it did not create a system restart point, and it did not prompt to install the Recovery Console. The scan completed and the system rebooted, but, I think I messed up again with my McAffee software where I disabled the VirusScan and Firewall, but forgot to turn off System Guard, and that started to spam me about unwanted changes to my system (I allowed them since they were from combofix), but I don't know how that might have impacted things.

So, I'm afraid it doesn't look like it was a clean run. Nevertheless, I do have a log here:

Oh boy. I think I messed up again. As soon as I turned SpyBot's Resident TeaTimer back on, it started spammnig me with changes. I foolishly denied most of them since that's usually what I do. And now, when I take another HijackThis log, I notice some entries have reappeared from the previous log in the last post:

These entries appear to be mostly "no file" ones. I hope I haven't screwed myself completely here.

Thank you.

Uninstall your Spybot now.. You can reinstall it back after we finished all these :thumbup2:

Please re-open HijackThis and click on Do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {237C1E46-0951-4D3A-96C2-CB23FA9BAFFE} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4bd48f13-a8f6-4ff0-8e82-943e6cd390d1} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {91669AFB-051B-5696-1A01-2910EC7C27C8} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {3C6301ED-0F78-4AF2-8150-D9C052361A8E} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HijackThis, then click Fix checked. Close HijackThis.

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

How's the computer now? :)

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Hello. I completed the task with HijackThis in fixing those files and they no longer show up on subsequent scans.

However, I am having difficulties getting the ESET Online Scanner to function. When I first tried to get it to work, Internet Explorer blocked the installation because it is being marked as an unsigned ActiveX program. I've tried to lower my security settings to allow the installation, but I still am only getting a red X where the scanner should be, even when I am able to click to install the program.

Is there anything I can do to get the scanner to work?

Thank you.

Lets do an alternative...

Lets run F-Secure online scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
Notes:
  • This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
  • You must have administrator rights to run this scan
  • This scan can take several hours, so please be patient

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Hello.

The OTCleanIt process appeared to work with no issues.

I did notice one thing just prior to cleaning. I had left my computer for a little bit (nothing was actively running like browsers though) and when I returned, McAffee had a pop-up on screen indicating that Adware.Clickspring was trying to install itself. I of course chose the Block/Deny option on the pop-up. I don't know if I should be worried or not. ClickSpring is supposedly "harmless", but naturally, I am annoyed that might still be around on my computer after all this cleaning, but, I suppose that might be a different issue alltogether. For reference. Here is a picture of the Event Log:

I'm also still a bit concened about how my mishaps with running ComboFix might have adversely affected my computer (but so far I haven't noticed anything). Though I guess I won't know for certain unless something will ever happen.

I guess if there's nothing more that can be done, then thank you very much for all your assistance. I'll definitely be more cautious now.

Thanks.

Ah.. do this... Then tell me whether your McAfee still detect the similar error...

Let's clean your Restore Points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous Restore Points which are likely to be infected)
To create a new Restore Point.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK. This will flush your old System Restore.
  • Then please UNCHECK the Turn off System Restore.
  • Click again on Apply, and then click OK. This will create a new Restore Point
System Restore will now be active again

If you are using Windows Vista, please go HERE for tutorial on how to use, disable and enable System Restore

Then please create a fresh Restore Point... Please visit this webpage if you do not know how..

If you are using Windows Vista, please visit this webpage for more information.

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Alright then. I completed the System Restore task with no problems and I have not yet seen any more pop-ups in McAfee (of course I don't know how long it might take for a pop-up to appear).

If that was it then I guess everything is working fine now. Anything that happens from now on will just have to be dealt with in a new thread.

Thanks again for all your help and advice, I truly appreciated it.
