Need some help! Just did a fresh install of Windows XP yesterday, and am getting some weird behavior.

Sometimes, not always, when opening a folder in Explorer a pop-up message will appear.

"WARNING! VIRUS DETECTED

Some dangerous viruses detected in your system. Microsoft XP files corrupted. Your personal data at the reach of anyone's hand. Internet history records and other personal information (passwords, chat sessions logs, adult materials) easily reachable. Download protection software now!

Click OK to enable antispyware software. (Recommended)"

Gives you two options... Yes and No

Yes leads me to <http://win-downloading-updates-server.com/ie.exe> in my browser, attempting to download "ie.exe"

No takes me to <http://ie-security.com>, with a message saying:

"WARNING! Your PC is vulnerable to virus infections due to the fact that it might not be properly safeguarded! Your PC is being scanned for security risks. Press OK to continue."

OK attempts again to download "ie.exe"
Cancels asks if you really want to exit, which it does.

Soon after all of this, another message in Windows pops up/

"Download Complete
You've downloaded "horse_f***ing_girl.avi - do you want to watch this movie now?"

Ok tries to take you to an adult site, Cancel will close out the pop-up.

And here's the DDS.txt report. Attach.txt also attached. Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

K

Yes, I did resolve this. Whatever it was replaced about 75 system files that I could not restore. I tried an sfc /scanboot, with no success. I ended up reinstalling XP. I do not know the cause of this. I found out it replaced the system files because many of the originals were renamed before being replaced. ie, shell32(2).dll and shell32.dll were both present. The versions of the corrupt files also did not match any updates from Microsoft.

I attempted to turn off WFP, and used Replacer to overwrite the system files, but that also didn't work.

Thanks for your time, I understand the volunteers here are very busy.
