I have a Toshiba Portege M300 that works very well apart from the fact that it has developed a start-up problem. After shut down (not after stand-by or hibernation) the 'chkdisk' blue screen appears and goes through a sequence before the Windows XP system boots. The notebook operates OK after this sequence.

Could the hard disk be failing? Or is there a simpler explanation (and cure)?

Hope that you may be able to help.
