Safe Mode Problems

This is a new one on me. Helping friend whose anti-virus expired and she left herself wide open. Now, It's so bad I don't know whats on there. This really buggles my mind. >I went in Safe mode and it still freezes in 'safe mode' when I try to download trendmicro or even super anti spyware to run them.
What can I do? I'm one who prefers to save thier files, (i guess and try to clean it up the hard way, cause i'm still trying to learn all I can). Any suggestions other than re-format??

The 'security' section of bleeping computer is where you need to focus your attention since there is malware on your machine.
