Greets all...Long time lurker, first time poster :thumbup2:

I am working on my Sisters computer that is all bunged-up with at least a couple goodies that I cannot figure out what to do with them.
The machine is an E-machine model D6417, XP home SP3 and 1gb ram. All I was told when I picked it up was that she was having troubles getting her AVG anti-virus to work. She then went to try and uninstall and re-install, but after it was uninstalled, it would not re-load.

Here is what I know now after I got it home. It has SystemSecurity Malware on it, and I also found a folder named "Spyware Guide 2008" under program files. Neither of these apps show up under add & remove or through Revo uninstaller.
The first thing I tried was to try and install any/all of the following: Malwarebytes Anti-malware, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, Bo-Clean, Avast!, Stinger, Trend Micros CWShredder, and two versions of HiJack This! (both trend micros and hijackthis.de versions)
Here's where the troubles start. The machine will not let me install much of anything. Alls i've managed to get running is Stinger (found nothing) and CWShredder which found and deleted CWS.Hidden.dll. All the other apps simply are not allowed to install. One of the Hijackthis! apps gets as far as the first install prompt and then the prompt disappears in a split second before anything is installed. That same behavior happens when trying to install Avast, Bo-Clean, and SuperantiSpyware. All the other apps do nothing. I click to install and nothing happens except that I can bring up task manager and I see them in there, but even waiting over an hour they do not install.
She only had IE7 installed, so I did manage to get Firefox to install from a flash drive. I then tried to get to any one of these sites to run an online scan:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/
http://www.eset.com/threat-center/cac.php
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm
http://security.symantec.com/
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
When I tried to access those site using IE7, I would get a page saying the link is no good. When I tried to access through Firefox, the page would start to load but then it shuts down all open Firefox pages before anything is ran. Both IE and FF are capable of getting online and surfing to a ton of other sites, but as soon as it wants to get to a security page, they fail to load.
I've also tried to do a restore, but I get to the page where you choose what day to rollback to, and when I click "next" nothing happens.
I also tried to get into any of the safe modes, but when it loads, it only loads an all black page with the safe mode text in the corners, but no desktop to work with.
I've also checked the host file and that seems to be OK.

So, bottom line is that I have no clue as to where to turn, and i'm hoping someone here can give me a hand. I ran the DDS.scr command and i've attached the "Attach.txt" file, and here's the DDS.txt info:

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix.. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.. Please re-enable them back after performing all steps given..

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.

If ComboFix asked you to install Recovery Console, please do so.. It will be your best interest..

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply..

Note: DON'T do anything with your computer while ComboFix is running.. Let ComboFix finishes its job..

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Hi Wan. Thanks allot for taking time to look into my problems. I do appreciate it. :)

I tried to run combofix both from the desktop and from a flash drive, but just like all the other apps i've tried to run or install, the computer/virus won't let it install. It shows the same behavior as some of the other apps i've tried. I click to install and it shows up under the task manager, but it will not run. I also re-tried both versions of HijackThis! and they still will not install.
I've also found out that I cannot access this site either. It just displays a prompt that the link is invalid or cannot find the site. :thumbup2:

Hi again Wan :thumbup2:

As mentioned in my original post, the machine and/or virus will not let me install very much of any security maintenance tools. So far i've tried:
Malwarebytes Anti-malware
SuperAntiSpyware
Spybot S&D
Bo-Clean
Avast!
Stinger
Trend Micros CWShredder
and two versions of HiJack This! (both trend micros and hijackthis.de versions)
and per your instructions, Combofix

Of those mentioned i've only been able to run Stinger (found nothing) and CWShredder which found and deleted CWS.Hidden.dll

I did get RSIT to run just now and I have those two files to post. The machine would not let the GMER.exe run, so I have no report for it.

Forgot to mention this in my previous post:

I noticed that when I plug in my flash drive into the crippled machine, within a few seconds there is an icon labeled "M" added to the flash drive and it's for skype. I delete that entry and again within a few seconds is pops back up. The machine doesn't have skype so I don't know what's up with that. Maybe it's part of the problem? :thumbup2:
I've attached two screencaps of said entry

That is malware.. Stick your pendrive to the computer and do below...

Please download Flash_Disinfector by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix.. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.. Please re-enable them back after performing all steps given..

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE or HERE and save it to your Desktop.

During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

**NOTE: If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
  • Tools->Options->Main tab
  • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

After that, double-click and run Combo-Fix. Let it finish its job and post the log here

If ComboFix asked you to install Recovery Console, please do so.. It will be your best interest..

Note: DON'T do anything with your computer while ComboFix is running.. Let ComboFix finishes its job..

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Combo-Fix found that the "Windows Recovery Console" was not active and asked if I wanted to install it. I said yes and it D/L it and install it.

Then Combo-Fix did find a rootkit and it asked me to write down the files that were going to be deleted. Here are those files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSpaxt.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSofxh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSosvd.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSnrsr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSriqp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSScfum.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSfxwp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSStkdv.log
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSnmxh.log
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSsbhc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSrhym.log

##################################################

And here's the Combo-Fix log:

ComboFix 09-02-05.01 - Owner 2009-02-05 22:26:15.1 - NTFSx86

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

NEXT

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start, then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::

Rootkit::
c:\windows\system32\_29c6bd5260946ccfcb48c99502368c04.sys_.vir
c:\windows\system32\29c6bd5260946ccfcb48c99502368c04.sys

File::
c:\windows\system32\_29c6bd5260946ccfcb48c99502368c04.sys_.vir

DirLook::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\885762302

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • ESET Online Scanner.
