I register at forums where I find myself finding answers to a variety of questions. Twice in as many days, I found myself on this website for two different reasons. That was a good sign.
I am a house system administrator of 3 computers, 2 with Windows XP and an old one with Windows 98SE and running Puppy Linux most of the time. The Windows XP computers are used for family fun (online gaming, music, etc) and are therefore exposed to the various diseases lurking around the internet. I find virus scanners annoying, so I just run a scan once a day. I have a constantly running ad-aware program. Firewall is XP and always on.
I came here because I found some suspicious files in my C: directory, where I don't expect to see a .exe file. I have Ad-Aware, AVG virus, Malwarebytes (installed today and found only one of the suspicious exe files.) I am now following instructions found on this website (tutorial 101).
I have no formal computer training, just a lot of experience making mistakes, reinstalling and making use of helpful websites like this one.
Thanks for listening.
