Hi
I have come to you via McAfee Community Support forum who suggested that I do a scan on HijackThis and submit it to you. Trojans were detected and something else - adware?- which I cannot really remember now. Sorry. Would be grateful for any help. I am not entirely sure that I have done the right thing now as your advice was to do a 'DDS pseudo scan' before submitting. I posted yesterday asking if this was needed when I had already done a HijackThis scan but, if there has been a reply, I cannot find it. Please let me know if I need to go back and do this. Would be grateful for any help. My computer has become so slow that it is very frustrating and time-wasting and it keeps freezing completely too.

If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

**NOTE:-- Note: The screen instructions indicate the attach.txt must be zipped before attaching (not posted) to your forum post. Instead, we want you to include attach.txt as an attachment to upload using the "Browse" button in the text editor when making your reply.

Run Kaspersky Online Scanner
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner.

This scan is for Internet Explorer only.

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select Run as administrator to perform this scan.
  • Open the Kaspersky Scanner page.
  • Click on Accept and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thank you for helping me. I am so sorry but I have already come across something I do not understand. I was instructed by DDS to disable any script blocking tools on my computer. I am not aware that I have any such thing but I probably have and do not know what it is or where to look for it. I just tried clicking OK, hoping that I didn't have the script-blocking mentioned and that the download would continue but nothing happened after that.

Hello.

I just tried clicking OK, hoping that I didn't have the script-blocking mentioned and that the download would continue but nothing happened after that.

There were no black window after you double clicked DDS and Ok? Wait a few minutes and see if 2 logs appear if not then proceed with another scan:

Download and Run OTViewit
  • Please download OTViewIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
  • OTViewIt.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Post back with:
-OTViewIT logs
-Any problems you still have?

HI EB

Well this time I managed to do the DDS scan but afterwards realised that your note said to disconnect from internet and disable AV protection before doing it. Does this mean that the scan will be no good? I am sorry but, with a novice like me, this is probably going to take a lot of your time. Please don't worry if you sometimes need to put my problem on the back-burner and come back to me later. I don't have time to stay here for much longer today but I am hoping that I will at least be successful in posting the scan.
I have included both files as attachments and have the message that they are 'available form the 'Manage Current Attachments menu. Hope this is OK. Chris

I need to leave soon so I didn't look at the logs yet. I will, once I come back home.

The DDS logs looks fine. Tell me what problems you still have.

Run a scan with McAfee and send me a log so I know what's it's detecting please.

Hi EB

A full scan on McAfee showed that I have a Trojan, listed twice as Generic Downloader.x and is quarantined. I don't seem to have the facility to select the logs to be able to send them to you but, as I have been having problems I have been doing regular scans and the logs show that I have had lots of things - fake alerts, Trojans, DNS changer.f.gen., Generic Rootkit., Generic.dx etc. all of which have been removed(repaired) or quarantined, after which I have followed McAfee's instructions for removal.

25th Jan scan - the last full scan before todays - showed two Trojans which have been quarantined and today's was the Generic Downloader, likewise. Between 25th and now I have been doing quick scans. Looks like I shall have to do full ones more often. I have also been doing regular scans with Malware Bytes, and Super antispy as advised by Bleeping Computer.

Sorry, I forgot to say that the computer is still running very slowly - maybe I should check the points in the advisory topic about this. Also I have now lost McAfee Site Advisor for the second time in a week. I got it back last time after advice from McAfee but why this happens I don't know. I shall try to follow the same steps again to restore it. Does this have anything to do with the Trojan?

Hello.

I doubt it but it could be. It is a good idea to look at the checklist if your computer is running slow. Let's run a GMER scan please because you said your AV was detecting backdoors. Tell me if anything else your McAfee finds later on.

Download and Run Scan with GMER

We will use GMER to scan for rootkits.
  • Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
    Alternate Download Site 1
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
    There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click the >>>
  • Click on Settings, then check the first five settings:
    • System Protection and Tracing
    • Processes
    • Save created processes to the log
    • Drivers
    • Save loaded drivers to the log
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.
  • After the reboot, run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.[list]
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for Show All.
  • Click on the Scan and wait for the scan to finish.
    Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan. You will know that the scan is done when the Stop buttons turns back to Scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose New>Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
If GMER doesn't work in Normal Mode try running it in Safe Mode

Important!:Please do not select the Show all checkbox during the scan..

Post back with:
-GMER scan log
-DDS scan log (only DDS.txt)

Hi EB

I was wondering why you were asking if I am still there when I was wondering the same thing about you so checked all the posts and my last one to you is not there. So strange as I checked that it had posted OK. I'm sorry.

What I said in that one was that I managed to download and save the GMER file, save to my desktop and unzip as in the instructions on here but nothing else was as it should have been. Instead of having GMER.exe I ended up with an icon looking like a zip and another without a zip. Didn't think that was a problem but - not sure that I remember the details exactly now - I clilcked on the one without a zip and a scan appeared to start immediately. I wasn't given the rootkit warning or asked if I wanted to scan; neither did I get the settings options.

Please don't worry about this any more. I am just about to leave for a week and things don't seem too bad now. I have since done full scans with McAfee, Malware Bytes and Superspy programmes and they don't show any problems - McAfee initially showed up Trojans but they have now been dealt with.

I appreciate the help you have given me and I am sure there are many more waiting for your attention. Many thanks

Preventing Infections in the Future

Please also have a look at the following links, giving some advice and Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection:

Disable Autorun on Flash-Drive/Removable Drives

When is AUTORUN.INF really an AUTORUN.INF?

USB worms work by creating a file called AUTORUN.INF on the root of USB drives. These INF files then use Autorun or Autoplay (not the same thing!) to execute themselves either when the stick is inserted, or more commonly, when the user double-clicks on the USB drive icon from My Computer (Windows Explorer)...


Keeping Autorun enabled on USB and other removable drives has become a significant security risk due to the increasing number of malware variants that can infect them and transfer the infection to your computer. Read USB-Based Malware Attacks and Please disable Autorun asap!.

If using Windows Vista, please refer to:
"Disable AutoPlay in Windows Vista"
"Preventing AutoPlay with Local Group Policy Editor or AutoPlay options panel"

Note: When Autorun is disabled, double-clicking a drive which has autorun.inf in its root directory may still activate Autorun so be careful.

Vist the WindowsUpdate Site Regularly

I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site!

Update Non-Microsoft Programs

It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Additional Security Programs

For a nice list of freeware programmes in all categories, please have a look at this thread with freeware products that are regarded as useful by the users of this forum: Commonly Used Freeware Replacements.

Update all programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs you have installed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
