I run services.msc then I click on automatic updates and in the startup type drop down box it says disabled. I change it to automatic and click apply but it changes back to disabled. If i try it a few times it will stay on automatic but once I click the start button it says

" could not start the automatic updates service on local computer. Error 1058: the service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "

then i click on the log on tab and in the you can enable or disable this service for the hardware profiles listed below box profile 1 is enabled.

After searching on Google, I found the following information from here: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet...tomatic-up.aspx

I will post the specific response below.
--------------------------------------------------

1. Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started:

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok

If you need further info -

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page" error message when you try to install an update
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;883614
The Automatic Updates service is missing
To reinstall the Automatic Updates service, follow these steps:

If all else fails:-

Windows Update Greyed Out - Restore (Line 179)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Automatic Updates options are grayed out?:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/aupolicy.htm
--------------------------------------------------

I hope those steps work for you.

I think I'd do a thorough check for malware.

Is automatic updates the only function that you are having problems with?

Did you check Event Viewer for possible clues?

BleepingComputer.com - Free Online Malware Scan(s) - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/usas...?showentry=1252

Additionally, I would suggest installing/updating/running SUPERAntiSpyware and Spybot S&D for the small fry malware items. Just because they are not as virulent as a virus...they are still highly annoying and intrusive, in various cases.
