Hello, this is my first time here. I have some problems that needs to be fixed on my computer. Whenever I open internet explorer, it sends an error message and it closes. I also have these annyoying pop ups that constantly pops up every couple of minutes. I've also noticed that I have homesearch assistant, search extender, and shopping wizard that I cannot uninstall. I've used Adware, spy sweeper and spypot but it doesn't seem to help much. Here's my hijackthis log. I hope someone can help me, I'd really appreciate it!

Hello ambiguous and welcome to BleepingComputer. You have quite a mess there - parts of at least three major infections - this may take a bit to get cleaned up.

Let's start by accumulating the tools we will need:

Please download CWShredder.exe to your desktop.
- Open CWShedder.exe.
- Click on Check for Update to be sure you have the most current version.
- Close CWShredder, we will use it later.

Download AboutBuster.zip to your desktop.
- Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster folder will be created.
- Navigate to the AboutBuster folder and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
- Click OK at the prompt with instructions.
- Click Update and then Check For Update to begin the update process.
- If any updates exist please download them by clicking Download Update.
- Close AboutBuster by clicking on Exit. AboutBuster will be used later.

Download and install the trial version of Ewido Security Suite.
- Launch Ewido by double-clicking the desktop icon.
- The program will prompt you to update; click the OK button.
- The program will now go to the main screen.
- On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
- Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed close Ewido.

Download Nailfix.zip.
- Unzip it to the desktop.
- Do NOT run it yet.

Download CCleaner
- Install it, but do not run it yet.

Open Notepad, (Start button, click on Run, type in Notepad, and click OK) copy & pastes the following block of text into Notepad.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispAppearancePage"=-
"Wallpaper"=-
"WallpaperStyle"=-
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"Wallpaper"=-
"WallpaperStyle"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Click on 'File', then 'Save as'
Select 'Save as type:' as All Files,
Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg. Close Notepad. This file will be used later.

Click on Start, then Run and type in services.msc.
- Locate and double click on Network Security Service.
- Set the Startup type: to Disabled, click Apply.
Do the same for services Srv32 and System Startup Service.

Configure Windows to enable viewing of Hidden and System files.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, Open CWShredder.
- Run CWShredder by clicking on the FIX button, and allow it to complete.

Double-click on nailfix.cmd.
- Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the log, I'll need to see it.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

Then double-click on the fix.reg file previously saved to the desktop.
- When it prompts to add or merge, say yes. This will clear some registry entries left behind by the malware.

Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
- Click OK at the directions prompt.
- Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
- Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
- It will begin to scan your computer. If it asks to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
- When it has finished, click Save Log.

Reboot normally.

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner.
- When it is finished close CCleaner.

Please do an online virus scan at two or more of the following sites:
TrendMicro Housecall
Panda ActiveScan
Symantec Security Check
CA eTrust AV WebScanner

Allow the online scan to remove anything they find. Report anything that they can not remove.

Post the Ewido report and the AboutBuster log, along with a fresh HJT log.

      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’

Hello OldTimer, I've followed the directions that you have put out for me. I didn't
have any problems with the instructions but I think that something is still wrong. I still have couple of pop ups and home search assistant, search extender and shopping wizard is still installed on the computer. And when I ran the bitdefender online scan, it gave a lot of items that could not be fixed. What can i do about that?
And below is my recent HJT log. Thanks for your help~

Hi ambiguous. It looks much better but you are correct, we still have some 'lurkers' in there so let's see if we can clean them up. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

First, we need to remove some services.

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Repeat the above steps for the folowing services:
    • Srv32
      System Startup Service
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste each line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key after each one:
    • sc delete Srv32
      sc delete SvcProc
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Now, open Notepad and Copy/Paste the contents of the quote box below into the new document:

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
  & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colListOfServices = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
  ("Select * from Win32_Service Where DisplayName = 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper'")
For Each objService in colListOfServices
If objService.State = "Stopped" then
MsgBox "Stopped Already"
Else
objService.StopService()
MsgBox "Service Stopped"

End IF
  objService.Delete()

Next

MsgBox "Done"

Save the file to your desktop as remsvc.vbs and close Notepad. Locate the remsvc.vbs file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it. You'll get a messge box saying 'Stopped Already' and then another message box saying 'Done!'.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {907D8F3A-1168-2FD5-2412-0912618AFDEC} - C:\WINDOWS\apico32.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winhi32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winhi32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ipch32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ipch32.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\apico32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winhi32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ipch32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ntqi32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\srv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #7

AdAware SE v1.06
  • Close ALL windows and start Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Right-click on the list and choose Select All
  • Click the Next button to finish removing the items that were found
  • When finished, REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi ambiguous. Let's check for some problems with Notepad.

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Check the checkbox for List minor sections (full)
  • Check the checkbox for List empty sections (complete)
  • Click on the Generate StartupList Log button
  • Click the Yes button to create the list
Open the StartupList.log file with Write and post the information back here.

Cheers.

Hi ambiguous. Let's proceed with this.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it to your desktop.

Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winhi32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkkk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\d3or32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sdksz.dll

[/list]
  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

After the reboot, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.
