Posted 13 August 2004 - 10:23 AM

I'm having problem after problem and it's getting worse almost every day so I can really use some help here.

It started months ago with getting the warning window saying svchost did something wrong and will be closed.
After many failed attempts trying to get that out of my pc I finally formatted my c-drive. Only like 2 days later it was back again and at this moment that's not the only problem I'm having.

So again I have svchost, with ctrl/alt/delete I see something running called NewsUpd (have no idea what that is) and in my favorites there's a link to free xxx pics and movies, I can delete that but it keeps coming back.
And now for the last days I can't go on internet normally.
When I try to go to a website it's redirected to http://www.windowws.cc/hp.htm?id=80 and then immediately redirected to http://296f8.ilxt.info/index.php?aid=80

So far I tried a lot of programs over the last few months to protect my pc but none of them seem to be able to fix the problem.
To be honest a lot of those programs do more harm then good to my pc I think.
Maybe that's because I have Windows 98SE, but Zone Alarm that should be compatible isn't. Every time I give ZA another try (even after I just formatted) my pc goes slow and I'm having problems.
So maybe after helping me with my log somebody can also give some advice on what protection to use?

Thanks and sorry for my long explanation but english not being my first language it's not easy to explain right with less words.

Download CWShredder from the below link and unzip it into a directory. Start CWShredder and click on the FIx button to have it remove all CWS infections it finds.

Download CWShredder from:

CWShredder Download Site #1

or

CWShredder Download Site #2

After you download the program, unzip it into a directory. Make sure all browser windows are closed and double click on the cwshredder.exe to start the program. When the program is loaded click on the "Check for Update" button, and if it finds an new version it will download it. You should then double click on cwshredder.exe again and click on the "FIX" button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

A tutorial that goes over this process step by step can be found here:

You are infected with a variant of the CoolWebSearch.

Download CWShredder from the below link and unzip it into a directory. Start CWShredder and click on the FIx button to have it remove all CWS infections it finds.

Download CWShredder from one of the following sites:

CWShredder Download Site #1

or

CWShredder Download Site #2

After you download the program, unzip it into a directory. Make sure all browser windows are closed and double click on the cwshredder.exe to start the program. When the program is loaded click on the "Check for Update" button, and if it finds an new version it will download it. You should then double click on cwshredder.exe again and click on the "FIX" button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

To get the best results it is recommended that you run it in safe mode. Reboot windows and press F8 at boot/windows startup, usually right after the beep. Then select safe mode.

A tutorial that goes over this process step by step can be found here:

How to remove CoolWebSearch with CWShredder

Once that is completed you should follow these steps in order to clean your computer of Malware which can include Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware, Hijackers and Dialers

Step 1:
Download Spybot and Adaware from the following locations and install them. You should run both programs and clean up what it finds. This is to gaurantee that you find the most malware you can installed on your computer.

Before running the scans on both programs, it is mandatory that you update the programs. There are update options in each program when you run them.

Spybot

Ad-aware

If you would like to learn more about how to use these two programs with the proper settings you can read the tutorials below:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware & Hijackers from Your Computer.

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware from Your Computer.

When you scan with both programs, fix everything that it finds.

When you are done with the scan and fixing the items. Please continue with the next step.

Step 2:

It is important that you run Spybot and Adaware before you proceed with this step. Fixing enties with Hijackthis may leave behind unwanted files on your computer if the previous step was not done first.

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

HijackThis Download Site #1

or

HijackThis Download Site #2

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program. Click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post, and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.

To see a tutorial on using HijackThis you can click on the link below:

HijackThis - Using HijackThis to Remove Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers

I can't update CWShredder and I can't even reach that website but I did use it.
I already had Spybot and AdAware, I also used it before my first post here.
Oké after using CWShredder I did use Spybot and AdAware again.

Looking at the log I do have an idea on what to fix but to be sure I'm not doing something wrong, I'm not doing anything till you tell me what to do.
So this is my hijackthis log right now.

I did what you said but I did get 1 error when I fixed.
All the files you said were on my drive and I deleted them.

I just tried to read my email and suprise... I can! So that's a big improvement.
But I still have this svchost.
Guess I'm not completely done yet with fixing all that's wrong on my pc so I'm waiting for the next step on what to do.

Thanks to this forum and you I feel more happy and positive today and I'm convinced again that I can win this long battle against all that's messing up my pc and end it very soon.

Here's my newest log.

Do this please:

Your log shows that you are seriously behind on windows updates. It is essential that you update your windows before we continue to help you as the infections could reoccur. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When its done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed. Then post a new log.
