I have a damaged HD I am able to connect via USB so I can see the files but I get an access denied when I try to open them and move them. I was told I need to turn off simple file sharing but I cant even find that. Its Windows XP home on a workgroup. When I try to go to teh prperties and sharing, there is no security tab.

Can you copy and paste the files from the external drive to the internal drive in Explore?

Right click on Start and choose Explore. If you click on the external drive the files will show in the right side pane.
