I've got some odd virus, everytime I go to the Microsoft Windows Update website it redirects me to Google... It's also not letting me update Avira.
I've done a scan with Avira and Stinger, I've managed to delete a Trojan, but that didn't seem to solve any problems. I also edited the Host file and removed garbage from there. So here's my Hijackthis log:

hi,

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinSit.exe

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\inf\Other.exe

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\Win.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dc] C:\WINDOWS\dc.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Fun] C:\WINDOWS\system\Fun.exe

O4 - Global Startup: winlogon.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\winlogon.exe
---------------------------------------------------
we will boot into safe mode to look for and delete some files.

copy/paste this part into notepad and save it so you can read it in safe mode. First to help show all files you can do this;

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart, chose the first option from the list; safe mode.
once at the safe mode desktop navigate to the following dir. and see if you can find and delete the following .exe

C:\Windows
look for the folder inf
delete inside the folder: Other.exe

also in C:\windows
delete the exe:
dc.exe

navigate to;
C:\WINDOWS\system32
look for a folder called: config
inside the folder delete only:
Win.exe

also delete: WinSit.exe
located in the system32 dir

navigate to:
C:\WINDOWS\system\
look in the system folder and delete only:
Fun.exe
----------------------------------------------------
reboot computer normally and do a online scan here:

ESET online scanner:

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

uses Internet Explorer only
check "YES" to accept terms
click start button
allow the ActiveX component to install
click the start button. the Scanner will update.
check both "Remove found threats" and "Scan unwanted applications"
click scan
when done you can find the scan log at:C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
please copy/paste that log in next reply along with a new hjt log

Hi, these were the only files that were present in HijackThis that I could fix:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinSit.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dc] C:\WINDOWS\dc.exe

I went in to safe mode but none of the files you told me to delete were present.
I also tried to use the online scan in Internet Explorer but that says the page isn't found.

Here's a new HijackThis log anyway:

hi,

ok. Can you update your AV ok? See if you can get to one of these sites to do a online scan:

Panda ActiveScan

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

* Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
* A new window will open...click the Check Now button
* Enter your Country
* Enter your State/Province
* Enter your e-mail address and click send (use a fake e-mail)
* Select either Home User or Company
* Click the big Scan Now button
* If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
* It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
* When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
* When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

F-secure scan:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

uses Internet Explorer only

click on the "start scanning button" near bottom of page.
click to accept/install the ActiveX applet
"accept" the License Agreement, click "full system scan"
Once the download of files completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan may take some time to finish.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.

Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a current HijackThis log.

Hi,

Sorry forgot to say about Avira, the update is still not working for some reason. I think I might try some other antivirus program, any preferences?
Also, which patch do you mean?

Edit: Figured I might as well scan it anyway with Avira not updated:

hi,

which patch do you mean?

I mean patching in general. If you visit Windows update and there are no critical (windows)updates to download then you are fully patched.
(At least until the next exploit that is!)

update is still not working

If you cant get updates then it will be worthless soon. I got these suggestions from there website, see if it helps:

Try going to Configuration (Expert mode) General->Update->Webserver->Proxy and setting the Radio button to "Do not use a proxy server"

If you still have problems try running (Double click) this file:
C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\preupd.exe (The extension may not be shown).

How Can I Reduce My Risk to Malware?

hi,

yes it all looks good. Normally the changes the DNS trojan makes will show up in a hjt log. Yours did not. Keep malwarebytes and always check for updates before scanning. the paid version has auto updates and a real time protection component.

If you have a router and you did not change the default log in and password then its possible the trojan could have added that ip range to your routers DNS settings. You will still be getting redirected if this is the case. If you use a router post back. Otherwise:

Two things: Java and System Restore.

Java:
Vulnerabilities in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml?ff3

System Restore, the how and why:

One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

Last: some information for you:

Reducing Your Risk To Malware:
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS,(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other Software up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities. Always install Service Packs.

2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons.You may be installing more than you think.

3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless.

4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message.

5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you need to install software to your computer.

6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer. Install ActiveX Objects with care. Do you trust the website?

7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts. Limited accounts can help prevent *malware from installing.*

8) Install and know the limitations of a software firewall.

9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client. Internet Explorer and OutLook Express are popular targets for malicious code because they are widely used. See also: Hardening or Securing Internet Explorer.

10) If your habits include: warez, cracks etc or you install files via p2p networks then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source? Do you really need another malware source?

A longer version in link below.

Happy Safe Surfing.

Hi,

Thanks man, I have a router but I've not been getting redirected any more, so I'm alright?

hi Ninjax,

your welcome. The trojan uses a list of default router log in and passwords for many different routers.
If a router is using the default log in and password then its possible that the DNS settings could be changed with in the router to re-direct browsing. Malwarebytes can remove the trojan and restore DNS settings on your computer, but not in your router.
If you are not using the default log in/passwords then you should be fine.
