Hi. Thank you in advanced for helping me with this issue. I have already posted in the "Am I Infected" forum with the details of this infection, but was referred to this forum. Here is that thread.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1100366

As I stated in my original post on the other board, I have a TDSS rootkit infection that apparently has allowed various trojans and other malware onto my computer. At first I wasn't able to access any tech support forums, download, update or run any antimalware programs. This is the only indication that the TDSS was even on my system. Also the AOL spyware scanner was detecing Kollah. I found and deleted the associated Kollah registry key manually. When I discovered the TDSS infection, I was able to "disable" the TDSS rootkit via the device manager, after which I was no longer redirected to ad websites but it may have caused a lot of damage already, which is why I was referred to this forum. I have run Malwarebytes, SAS, and Gmer. Gmer showed that I still have the TDSS active on my system. I have copied and pasted the DDS log and attached the other part of the log to this post.

Again, thank you for your help!

Hello. I am PropagandaPanda (Panda or PP for short), and I will be helping you.

Disable Realtime Protection
Antimalware programs can interfere with ComboFix and other tools we need to run. Please temporarily disable all realtime protections you have enabled. Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.

To disable McAfee:
  • Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Posted Image sign.
    Right-click it -> chose Exit.
  • A popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on Yes to disable the Antivirus guard.
To disable SpyBot's TeaTimer:
  • Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  • Click Posted Image and then on "Advanced Mode"
    Posted Image
  • You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Uncheck this checkbox:
    Posted Image
  • Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy
Download and Run ComboFix
If you have already run ComboFix, delete your copy and download a new one. If the computer in question is unable to download ComboFix, transfer it using a removable media (CDs, flash drive).

Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1, Link 2, Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted ImagePosted Image

  • When the Recovery Console has been installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted Image
  • When finished, ComboFix will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

In your next reply include:
-the ComboFix log
-a new HijackThis or DDS log

Please also tell me of any changes you have made to your computer since you started your topic.

With Regards,
The Panda

Thanks for helping! I made no changes to the computer before you responded. I could not disable McAfee because as I stated in the previous (linked) post, when I open McAfee, it is a blank screen with the McAfee logo on it. When I right click the McAfee icon at the bottom right corner of the screen, I don't get an option to exit. So I ran Combofix w/McAfee, but made sure to ignore any pop ups from the anti virus. Here is the Combofix log.

Hello.

Looks like ComboFix took care of that. There is something I want to take a closer look at.

Download and Run Dirlook
This tool creates a log of the contents of folders.
  • Download DirLook by jpshortstuff to your desktop.
  • Double click DirLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below. Do not copy the word "code".
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\twain32
  • Click the DirLook button to start the scan. This may take some time for large folders.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan (C:\dl_log.txt). Please post this log in your next reply.
Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
If you already have MBAM installed, simply update and run a quick scan.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware setup and to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

Refer to the steps given here on installing MalwareBytes, running the scan, and saving the log file (not on using File Assasin).
  • If you have trouble updating, try the other mirror download site.
  • Should the computer in question not be able update using the normal method download the update file from here, using another machine if needed. Simple double click the file to install the updates.
  • If MalwareBytes asks to reboot to remove certain items, do so right away.
Please include the scan logfile in your next reply.
Please post back with:
-the DirLook
-the MalwareBytes log

How is your computer running now?

With Regards,
The Panda

Hello.

Let's finish off that..

Download and Run OTMoveIT
  • Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer to your desktop. If you have already used the program, there is no need to download a new one.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. If you are running on Vista, right click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below. Do not copy the word "code".
    :files
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\twain32\

    :commands
    [emptytemp]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste List Of Files/Patterns To Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Close all open windows expect OTMoveIt.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3.
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key. Navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest ".log" file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

F-Secure Online Scan
Please run F-Secure Online Scanner.
This scan is for Internet Explorer only.
  • It is suggested that you disable security programs and close any other windows during the scan. While your security is disabled, please refrain from surfing on other sites. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Go to F-Secure Online Scanner
  • Follow the instructions here for installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs, click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically. The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and copy the entire report in your next reply.
  • Be sure to re-enable any security programs.

Please post back with:
-the OTMoveIt log
-the F-Secure scan log

How is your computer running now?

I keep getting an error message when I try to run the F-secure scan on IE8.

"The instruction at "0x09c00068" referenced memory at "0x09c00068". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

It gives two options OK and CANCEL. I press OK and it closes IE8.

Hello.

That's no problem. We'll just skip the online scan.

Looks good. Unless there are any issues at the moment, we can warp up.

Download and Run OTCleanIt
This program will remove the tools we have used.
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer to your desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe to start the program.
  • Click the big CleanUp! button.
  • When asked if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. Restart your computer when prompted.
Delete the file after use, if it did not delete itself.

Set New System Restore Point
Now you should set a Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, tools cannot access it to delete these bad files, which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point after cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click System Restore.
  • Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen then click Next. Give the Restore Point a name then click Create.
  • Then, click on Start > Run and type:
    cleanmgr
  • Click OK > More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Preventing Malware Infection in the Future
Please take some time to look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections: For general slowness problems that you may have, take a look at Slow Computer/browser? It May Not Be Malware. Read How to use the Startup Database to identify and disable uneeded processes and increase the amount of available resources.

Do you have any further questions or concerns?

With Regards,
The Panda

Thank you so much. I haven't been home in a couple days (I'm posting from my phone) to do the cleanup, but I will as soon as I go back home. My computer is running great. Thanks for all your help. It was greatly appreciated!

LOL Yup phones can definitely do that now a days. A far cry from the days when a color phone was a phenomenon. hehe

Well I just completed the last step. I just returned home after being displaced by a minor fire in my home. Thanks for your patience and all your help! :thumbup2:
