Alright so me, being stupid, I was unhappy with my 2 GB RAM - so I popped the case of my old computer and found 2x 256 RAM sticks, "cool..." I thought.

I opened the case for my current computer and it had 2 vacant slots, I tried to squeeze those bastards in and clip them to the motherboard but they just wouldn't! Everytime I try to clip the upper one the bottom one sticks out and vice versa so I said to myself, oh well, what's the worse that can happen? I plugged my computer back in with the RAM sticks still not properly clipped... I booted up, computer makes weird noises, I smell smoke...

So I panicked and removed the God forsaken RAM sticks and re-plugged my computer, still with the same weird noise, but I didn't notice any smoke, the monitor does not receive signal, I am doomed.

PLEASE help me, I am taking this to some guy tomorrow morning but I need to know what I damaged and if it is caused by the RAM incident and if I can fix it. Can they restore the motherboard if it's damaged or do I need a new one? IS THE HARD DRIVE DAMAGED?...

Your help is much appreciated, sorry for the long post.

If you look at the RAM module you will notice that there is a notch in the tabs area, this is to key the module so that it can't be installed in an expansion slot that isn't designed for that type of module. If you had to force the module into the expansion slot I'm guessing that the modules are two different types and aren't compatible. You may have broken the slot or shorted it when you turned on the computer. With the presence of smoke I'm guessing the later.

This is a rough way to learn, good luck.

I expect you should be prepared to at least be up for a replacement motherboard. It's unfortunate, but the memory blunder will no doubt be the cause.

Other components such as the hard drive may well have survived, only time will tell. Good luck.

It's possible other components were damaged but it's not likely. It sounds like your mortherboard may be toast and likey the memory you were placing in the slots is damaged but most likey it did not effect other components. When you turn the machine on do you hear any beeps or just fan noises etc.?

enos was right, I took my computer to the workshop today, the guy checked it out and turned out the RAM slot where I jammed the 256 sticks is... a little overcooked.

I replaced my motherboard for about 180$ and everything is working fine, everything else in my system survived!
Thanks for the help people I appreciate it!

Thanks for coming back and relating the solution. I'm sure it will benefit others.

Well. I see

Hell
Bastard
and God.-

I get a post deleted because of a misunderstanding Guy asked how to make a Sig I gave him a tutorial on how to make a cigarette. Post gets deleted. This post has foul language in it. Everyone is okay with that.

Hell. That's not nice even because the word god is in it. we all know 70% of people on here are atheist
Bastard. Well that's no way to describe something.
God. well like I posted. 70% on people on here are atheist

No harm no foul however. I would suggest http://www.merriam-webster.com/ to find better ways to explaining your current problems

Having these words put into a post makes it seem like the OP sound uneducated. We hope that's really not the case.

Thank you.

Do you really want to get into this in public? I think it would have been better handled privately via PM. But since you have decided to bring it out to discuss. Here's your reply. The post you made neither contributed to solving the members dilemma, nor was a friendly reply to an obviously brand new member.

As far as this post having foul and vulgar language, you should have handled this via a PM to staff. If this in fact was offensive to you.

And Yes I have seen it and made note of your obviously sarcastic and disruptive post. If it's attention you want and or need. Trust me, you've gotten it, from more than just me. But I doubt it's the sort you were looking for.

Understandable.

Also. So everyone knows. I refuse to fight bicker or even argue about anything. I'll throw out my two cents in and let it go. Not really necessary to carry on such garbage. For example. This is it. I said what I had to say. My man Animal said what he said. Thats that. No need for everyone to come back waiting for a blow up. haha I just don't stress out about it. Animal and anyone else shouldn't have to worry about that. Again I'm a nice guy. Just don't step on my toes. Like rub my back. I'll rub yours.

Take care StupidRam. glad you got the issue resolved. Sorry If I have taken your context out of context. My apologies Take care. I'll be around if ya need me.

If you truly were to let it go as you suggest, you would not have made another reply, in a topic that does not belong to you.. which you essentially hijacked, and that you offered no help for, Understable, yes I think we understand you LOL

Sorry If I have taken your context out of context.

Well now Goldwyn logic would dictate, that you would not have to be sorry for taking stupidRAM's topic out of context, if you had not done such a thing, as you so eloguently confess to doing.
