I'm having this odd problem with one of my installs of XP.

I can log on OK. I can do things like update my virus scanner, or run a windows defender scan & I can use any of the navagation menus but I can't open any programs from either the start menu or from quick launch if I attempt to the window hangs & the only way I can close it is with C.A.D. I can navigate to the control panel but then the same thing happens there. I can't open anything & the only way to close the window is with Control Alt Delete. After using C.A.D I lose all my icons on the start bar & if I attempt to shut down the computer it hangs on the windows is closing screen.
There is one other thing that might have relevance here this is a new install of XP & was done with version of XP3 created with nLite although I have used it on several other computers without problems. The install was patched with all of the latest patches & had had a onecare scan done on it while it was still more or less working.
As well I had run CCleaner & Super Anti spyware & AVG.

The problem slowly got worse over a number of days, at first if I waited for a short while after logging on it would work just fine & as if there was nothing at all the matter, but the time I had to wait after logging on got longer & longer until I reached the point where I am now. I have to harddrives on this computer both with XP installed. I use this one for games & have a minimal set of programs installed as you can see this one is working fine so I don't think the issue is with hardware. I cleaned the Registry with CCleaner & may have done some damage with that. Thanks in advance for any Help Regards BB
PS: I can log on in safemode allright & Iv'e just done a reboot to last known good config & the install seems to be working fine now allthough I don't trust it to last Thanks BB

Why not try a repair install of XP?

Takes about 35 minutes.

Ok Thats probably the next step it didn't last, well for a couple of weeks it was fine, but now I'm back where I started. I've never had a problem like this before, I will try the repair option Regards BB
I just read about the need to uninstall ie7, but I can't do that as I can't open the control panel, I suppose I can uninstall it from safe mode allthough it's looking like a new install might just be easier Thnx BB
