I am running windows xp on my desktop and recently noted that when I boot my computer a box named "common" comes up with a file called "helper.sig". Previous recommendations from a google search suggest downloading brute force unistaller (bfu.exe) and deep dive (deepdive.bfu). When I went to this website http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip I couldn't find the files to download. Any other suggestions?

Hello, yes those tools are some of what's needed. They should NOT be run without supervision. Best that you post a HJT log and have them run the needed tools with you. so yuo don't render your PC useless.
Follow this guide.. Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Hijackthis
Then post the comeplete log here with the same explanation of the issue.
